Election
May Carry Enough States as
Third Party Candidate to
Prevent Majority in
Electoral College.
Has No Chance to Win
By Mark Sullivan.
A man well Informed on political
ccndliirna In Nebraska says tha; ‘.n
that niinost exclusively agricultural
part t,* the country there is a sympa
thetic feeling toward the president
1 led on the theory that Coolidge. by
ins origin and association. Is respon
sive to the farmer. Hi says:
"In this part of the .country the
early progressive movement and the
Non-Partisan league had their origin
laigtiy in the discontent of the far
.1 ,er. I mix very much with farriers
and find that the expression ‘dirt
fanner’ la clearly used with reference
tu men who run for office as a quail
f.vu.tion therefor. If I were doing thj
political work of this state this year
I would select some well-informed
high-class, broad-minded farmer wa<>
actually drives his own team and
works his own soil. That would be
my slogan in the campaign for the
election of my rran. I am not ma'n
talning this point as a necessary
qualification for office, but simply as
the qualification for a candidate for
office, which is quite a different
thing from qualification for office.
The dirt farmer idea as applied to
Coolidge became thoroughly adver
tised when he was found at his fath
er's home when he became president.
He was found doing all that any
farmer in the agricultural west does,
and without any thought of'using it
a3 a political argument, which in it
self makes it the best political argu
ment.”
However, the same man who speaks
thus of the favor of Coolidge with
the farmers goes on to say that Ford
is more popular in this agricultural
territory than any other one man:
"As to the presidential sentiment,
it is my opinion that in Nebraska
at this time. If all men who aspire
to become president were put upon
a ballot without any party designa
tion, Henry Ford would poll from
six to seven out of 10 voles In the
agricultural and labor element. It
is almost Impossible to find a demo
< rat or republican farmer who drives
a Ford who is not for him, and ag
grssslvely so. In order that youf may
not think I am speaking from a
personal bias. I might state that my
cwn leanings at this time are for
Coolidge, with Hoover and Hughes
ns equally available In the order
named. The laboring man argues
for Ford becuse he paye the highest
wages and had no trouble with his
lislp. The farmer argues, If It had
not been for Ford the automobiles
would have been too expensive for
the farmer to buy, and numbers of
other reasons ars given.
The extent of the Ford sentiment
is reflected in the fact that Ashton
C. Bhallenberger, congressman-elect
from thia district, hag come out open
ly for Henry Ford for president and
has announced that ho will do his
utmost to procure a delegation for
Henry Ford to the next national dem
ocratic convention. Mr. Shallenberg
er is a very keen political observer,
lcmpered with plenty of experience,
having formerly been governor on?
fenn and also congressman. It Is be
lieved by political wiseacres that
fc'hallenberger Is trying to sound out
sentiment, to see if the Ford band
wagon might carry him to the United
Htates senate. I mention the Shal
lenberger incident as an indication
of the very strong Ford sentiment in
Nebraska. Mr. Khallenbergcr repre
sents the congressional district for
merly represented by Sr-nator Gcorg“
W. Norris, which district was prob
ably the center of progresslvlsm when
that movement was at ita height."
In North Dakota a man who has the
completest possible knowledge of po
litical conditions In that state mak<.“
the following points:
“If Ford should seek the demo
cratic nomination ho would be most
l.kely to carry the North Dakota pri
i tarles. With reference to Ford, tin
general feeling Is that he would make
a poor president, but a splendid ear,
didate. If Ford vw-re to seek the
democratic nomination he would hi
most likely to carry North Dakota.
I As regards the republican situation,
! If the Nonpartisan league remains
within the republican party. La Fol
lette Is likely to calry the state.
Hiram Johnson ts not at this time
very strong in North Dakota. There
is very~llttle Hiram Johnson talk.
