Lincoln, Sept. 18.—Mrs. E. H. Eng
land. director of the division of child
hygiene, Nebraska department of
public health, declared herself against
the holding of bady contests, and os
being in favor, Instead, of baby con
ferences.
"I take this stand,” she said, “be
t-iu.se these ‘best baby’ contests only
bring out the more perfect children.
.Mothers who have children with
small or large defects will not enter
their children in a contest, which they
know the children have no chance
I.f winning. I think ail these contests
wherein the perfect baby is sought
after should he turned into confer
i nces, where the less fortunate child
is examined and its mother given
helpful suggestions.”
Mrs. England’s remarks were made
in connection with a letter, now being
sent to all doctors In Nebraska and
to .all officers of the Federated
"Women's clubs In the state, asking
them to co-operate In the child hy
giene work of the department.
The letter to the club women lays
nross On tbe number of Infant deaths
in the state during 1922 and says
that “the number of children who
are suffering from physical defects
which will handicap them through
life. If not corrected, 1s even greater.
“Lack of information, on the part
of people in general, as to the cause
of this unnecessary waste of life and
the means of preventing is account
able for this loss to a large degree,”
the letter states, adding that the
remedy for this condition lies in pub
lic education. The letter asks the
co-operation of the people in this mat
ter of public education.
The letter to the doc’ora, a longer
^jfne, urges them to co-operate In the
work and to assist in the holding of
baby conferences and clinics.
Fall Calving Is Best,
Government Advises
Under most conditions on the dairy
farm, gays the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture, fall calving is
desirable. The calf receives milk for
the first few months of its life, and
when it is ready to he weaned from
this food pood succulent pasture Is
available. During the winter it lias
learned to e»t grain and roughage
while It has been getting whole milk,
skim milk, or milk substitutes, and
when grass comes It can make the
change without getting a setback.
Tlier# is another advantage in fall
t living, as th^ cow gives the largest
flow of milk at the season when
prices are usually the highest. Also
calves are at the.right age so that if
well developed they may he bred to
calve in the fall. From the stand
point of profits on milk, local condi
tions. such «s cost of feed and price
of milk In different seasons, should
hive consideration.
Man Accused of Robbery
at Glenwood to Face Charge

issued an extradition warrant which
will convey Willard elites from Oma
ha to Glenwood, la, to answer to the
(barge of breaking and entering a
garage owned by Milo Schick.
The owner alleges he surprised
prowlers at his garage and in a gun
fight that followed hs wounded one
of the men and this man later Impli
cated Clltes.
Farmers’ Union Notes
Omaha—A meeting of tha board of di
rectors of the National Farmers' union,
to complete arrangements for the na
tional convention of the organization to
be held in Omaha, November 20, 21 and
22, will be held in Sallna, Kan., on Sep
fember 20. according to notice received
by State President Osborn from National
President Barrett. Air. Osborn is a mem
ber of the n^flonsl board. In addition
to the delegates from the various states,
who will constitute the voting members
of the convention. It Is expected that
many visiting members front Nebraska
and nearby states will attend. The Ne
braska state union is planning several en
tertainment features.
Elmwood—A crowd estimated at *00
persons attended the meeting of the Pass
County Farmers union, held in the opera
bouse in the evening of September 10.

the program was the motion pictures of
Farmers union state-wide activities. State
President Osborn made the principal
address of the evening, on the general
subject of organization and co-opcraflon.
The various locals of the county contrib
uted to the program, which consisted of
readings and music. Two male quartets
from Eagle and Alvo aroused much en
