Aims of Vocational Train
ing for Future.

culture Henry C. Wallace, tvrltten to
J. C. Wright, director of the federal
board for vccatlonal education, Wash
ington. Mr. Wallace writes:
"As on* of the representatives of
agriculture on the teaeral board for
vocational education let me express
my pleasure at the gratifying progress
shown by our public schools In the
field of agricultural vocational edu
cation.
"In this country we have 6,400,000
farms producing about $14,000,000,
000 worth of agricultural products.
There are between 300,000 and 400,000
, new farmers taking Up the manage
ment of a farip for the first time each
year. For the most part these new
operators are the sons of farmers
who have had experience on their
fathers’ farms, hut have not had or
ganized instruction that would fit
them to operate farms in keeping with
the change in agricultural conditions.
This phase of education lias been neg
lected for many years, but happily
1 he passage of the Smith-Hughes act
lias at last set up a system of edu
cation to medt these needs.
"The agricultural and home .eco
nomics vocational education work of
ihese schools must grow. To meet
the needs of this country it means
i hat some day when this system of
education is completed we must be
able to turn Out from 300,000 to 400,

of young women each year who will
be trained through classroom instruc
tion and Jiome projects to operate
arms and farm homes.

voung men and young women to
properly take the places in the farm
community, It will mean that we
must have constantly In training
500,000 to 3,000,000 young people.
We should not be satisfied until the
agricultural vocational work has
reached at least this number by pro
viding systematic instruction and
project experience under trained in
structors for every young man and
young woman who may deaire tt> be
come a farm operator or a rural
home-maker.
"The system of agricultural edit
■ ation is now quite Complete. We
have the Department, of Agriculture,
the agricultural colleges, and the ex
periment stations doing scientific in
vestlgation work. We have the col
leges of agriculture trainlflkr young
nten and young women in the science
of agriculture.
"The agricultural vocational schools
>re providing systematic, organized
training for the young men and
women o^ er 14 years of age who are
not able to attend college. The Smith
I.ever act provides a system of prac
tical instruction to men, women, boys
and girls, through demonstrations,
that ia aimed to bring about an im
^^jiedlate improvement in agrirulte and
^rural life. With such educational
systems of Instruction all working in
dose co-operation we should be able
to build up a rural citizenahlp that
will Insure great national growth and
prosperity."
GIRL KILLED
Lincoln, Sept. 10.—Miss Freda Gaus
man, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Herman Gausman, living near Milford,
was instantly killed and Henry Flcken
suffered minor bruises when the auto
mobile in which they were riding
collided with another car near Milford
shortly before daylight this morning.
Miss Gausman was thrown clear of
Hie car by the impact, but sustained
a crushed skull. The driver of the
colliding car, ‘whose identity Is un
, known, escaped unhurt.
