Car Overturned and School
t Teacher Narrowly Escapes
Death—Others Injured.
A traveling bag which became
wedged between her body and the
steering wheel of her automobile is
said to have i&ved the life of Miss
Lottie Koop, teacher at the Saunders
school, when her automobile was
overturned west of Millard on the D.
L. I), highway last night.
Miss Koop was returning to Omaha
from Louisville. A speeding automo
' bile passed her on a steep hill and
struck her sedan in such a manner
that it threw the machine into a deep
ditch. The speeding car did not stop.
Witnesses estimated that it was
traveling BO miles an hour.
An attempt was made to overtake
the car by other motorists but in
vain. Witnesses were indignant and
threals of lj-nchlng were made had
the speeder been overtaken.
Arthur Thomas of Stroud ft Co.,
who witnessed the accident, hurried
to the scene and aided by other mo
torists succeeded in removing the car
from Miss Koop. who was wedged in
by a traveling bag which had Jammed
between 'her and the steering wheel.
Her brother. Harvey Koop, assistant
cashier of the Home Pavings bank of
Louisville, was thrown clear of the
car. Miss Gertrude Phelps of Iiouls
vllle was thrown through the wind
shield.
Bliss Koop was badly bruised, her
brother was cut by flying glass and
Bfiss Phelps was badly cut by gass.
STILLS FOUND
McCook. Neb., Sept. 3.—Yesterday
Sheriff Mark Brennan and deputies
of Hitchcock county and Sheriff
George McClain and Deputy Sheriff
Peter Karthauser of Red Willow
county raided the farm of Robert
Drain. Just over the line in Hitchcock
county, about 10 miles southwest of
McCook. They were rewarded by un
covering the largest moonshine
whisky plant yet found In this sec
r tion of Nebraska.
Hidden in a canyon, under a dense
growth of sunflowers, were found two
20-gallon stills. 35 gallons of whisky,
five gallons of alcohol, 500 gallons of
mash, 12 barrels of mash in soak,
with copper coils in two of them, a
150-gallon water tank, two copper
boilers, three oil stoves, 75 empty
sugar sacks, bags of raisins and a
multitude of minor items of equip
ment, making over two large truck
loads, which were hauled to Trenton.
The owner has not yet been appre
hended.

Nebraska City, Neb., Sept. 3.—The
i ecords at the office of the county
judge of this county show that only
two marriages were celebrated In this
county during the month of August,
whereas the average for a number of
years has been 12 to 15. The records
:.]so indicate that during August 12
couples front Nebraska City and near
here crossed the Missouri river into
Iowa to be married. The reason as
signed is the aversion of young Cou

Fled Cloud, Neb , Sept 3.—Stock
buyers report a falling off in the num
her of hogs being marketed just now.
'Alien the hog cholera was spreading
many farmers, fearing their herds
would take the disease, shipped all
hog# that)were t», heavy to vaccinate,
even though they were not thorough
ly fattened. Now they are holding
‘the immune hogs until they are well
rounded out. Vaccinating was done
on a large scale In this country and
cholera i* dying out.

Three-Day Exposition to Open
September 11—Many
Novel Features.
Madison, Nob., Sept. 3.—Tbe "Ban
ner Fair of Nebraska" which will be
held from September 11 to 14 at
Madison, will be the largest in the
history of the Madison county agri
cultural society which is now in its
42d year, according to t lie esti
mates and preparations which have
been made by the more than 400
members of the society.
The stock show’ promises to surpass
anything attempted in previous
years, for already representative
stockmen from four counties, Platte,
Madison, Stanton and Antelope, have
signified their intention of showing
at Madison. Entries are not limited
to Madison county and it is hoped to
make the various shows representa
tive of northeast Nebraska.
Besides the stock shows the third
meeting of the Short Ship Race cir
cuit, composed of Stanton, Madison,
Hartington and Albion, will be held.
Purses aggregating, $2,500 will be
disbursed at Madison and the four
towns comprising the circuit will
hand up a total of more than $12,000.
Baseball Tournament.
An elimination bakebaii tournament
will be played during the three days
of the festival. The ball clubs tak
ing part represent Humphrey, Platte
Center, St. Edward and the Norfolk
State league team.
Eight big free acts have been en
gaged to entertain afternoon and
evening and four brass bands will
furnish music. The feature of the
evening programs wil! be the Inter
national Girl revue, a musical com
edy carrying a company of 30 per
sons.
School children of the district will
be the guests of the fair a sociutlon
Friday, September 1 4. Several fea
tures will be dii’eclly under the su
pervision of the schools of Madison j
county. Particular amorug them will
be a pageant depicting the history ofi
Nebraska.
To Show Male's History.
The important episodes in the life
of Nebraska will he historically pic
tured by floats that will lie designed
and built by the various districts tak
ing part. Th# pageant is being di
reefed by Mi*s»s .lean and Marlon
rreece of Battle Creek.
A r|og show unique in its character
and perhaps the first and only one
of its kind ever held in Nebraska will
be a big feature children's day, Fri
day. Nearly $100 will be distributed
among the youngsters who w ill enter
their pet canines in the parade which,
led by a band, will take place in the
afternoon, t is expected that at least
200 dogs will lie entered in the show.
Several hundred dollars have been
spent in improving and rearranging
the grounds, bringing the total in-j
vestment in buildings up to $2ii,noo
and giving the grounds one of the
best layouts In the middlewest.

J Edward Wissler and Mary Lugen
bill were married in August, 1873. at
Falls City, Rev. Mr. fJreenrniller of
the Lutheran church officiating. The
journey froni the home to Falls City
in 1873 was made in a lutuber wagon,
the trip ench way occupying most of
a day. Mr. and Mrs. Wissler arc the
parents of nine living children, 25
grandchildren and one great-grandson.
All of the children were present ev
oept Fred and John. A bounteous
dinner was served and the couple was
presented with a purse of gold.
