Broadway are calling!
Alyce McCormick, Nebraska beauty
winner, who won a leading role in
t he chorus of two Shubert. shows in
New fork last season,'because of her
beauty and charm, is listening, very
attentively.
On the other hand, she has tasted
success In business. For the last
three weeks she has been employed
by the M. E. Smith company, meeting
the trade, selling and modeling.
In thia. her lateat occupation, ahe
has met with decided success, accord
ing to those who work wtih her. Her
sales have been many and she proved
quite a “hit” at the style show con
ducted by the M. E. Smith company
during the recent Merchants' Market
week.
Shall It be the bright footlights of
the stage, name studded in glaring
bulbs over theater entrances, beauti
ful stage clothes and the fascination
of actress life?
Or shall it be dignified clothes,
salesmanship, punching the time clock
and strict attention to multiplying
the number of sales?
What Will Answer Be?
That is the question that is troub
ling Alyce McCormick as she piles
and hangs hundreds of garments at
the M. E. Smith company and "meets
the trade” from her own city and the
small towns of Nebraska and the sur
rounding states.
It's the question that is puzzling
her as she sits by the piano in her
I home at. 3025 Arcadia avenue practis
ing her songs of the stage, and she
also thinks of it as she goes through
1 he steps of her dances “just to keep
in practice.”
"There is a fascination about me
stage and footlights that can't be
denied," she said last night, "but I
have found a pull in business that ia
just about as strong. I don’t mind
punching the time clock and early
^a hours compared to the hours I kept
“ on Broadway. I enjoy meeting real
men and women, who are all business,
especially the merchants from the
smaller towns and cities.
Each Has Its Thrills.
’ l like to sell. I believe there is
just about as much fascination in
leading a big order for'merchandise
one sells as to read the theater pro
gram with your name in big type.
"I don’t mind hanging up clothes
on display racks instead of hanging
my own beautiful stage dresses on
the wall of a dressing room.
"I've enjoyed every day of the
three weeks that I've been in busi
ness and I really don't know what to
do."
One thing is certain, Nebraska s
prize beauty is through with singing
on street corners for the Volunteers
of Americaf of which her father. Major
F. A. McCormick, is superintendent
here.
•I believe it is a wonderful work,
that of aiding the man or woman who
is down and out," she said. "My
father and mother have made many
sacrifices in that cause. I feel that
I must plan my own future. I hope
i can make a success of what -I un
dertake. I thought it would be the
«,age. I’ve got a battle on now bo
•X* veen two loves,' the stage and busi
ness."
Miss McCormick said that because
of her temporary decision to work
along business lines it is a certainty
that she won't appear in a Broadway
production this season.
"If I change my mind and Miss
Staije wins over Mr. Business I can
continue -my tour of the state in a
skit which was arranged for mo by
Mr. Robert Sheehan who had charge
of the F.lks and Knights of Colum
him show.
"Really I just don't know what to
do."

Krueger in the department of socio
logy at tije University of Omaha.
The new instructor comes from the
Richmond School of Social Works.
Richmond, Ya. lie received his early
education in Kentucky, and was
graduated from the Western Kentucky
State Teachers’ college at Bowling
Oreen.
At the University of Oklahoma he
received an M. A. degree, serving
in that institution as instructor in
the extension department.
Professor Sullenger has made a
series of social surveys and his
studies of shellshock victims have
attracted considerable attention.

urely cruise down the Potomac on
the presidential yacht Mayflower,
President and Mrs. Coolidge and sev
eral close friends arrived back at the
White House shortly before 9 last

Leaving Washington shortly after
1, the president spent the afternoon
and early evening at work and gain
ed a ahort respite from the heat of
Washington and from the interrup
lions to hia work while at the White
House offices. The trip was as far
as Aberdeen, Md., and return.

Chicago, Sept. 2.—Unwittingly,
flappers are on the right road to
live to be 350 years old. They are
living closer to nature in eome re
spects and with a little moderation
and more sleep—until they are 35—
they will turn the century mark hale
and hearty.
The good news came from Dr. F,
W. Collins, dean of the United States
School of Naturopathy, in his address
before the convention of the Ameri
can Naturopathic association.
Flappers. Dr. Collins said, in dis
carding what he termed superfluous
clothing, are adding a decade to their
lives with every garment they leave
off.
Eve and Adam would have lived
even longer than they did had they
not adopted the fig leaf garb and be
gun eating a complicated diet. Dr.
Collins declared.
“By following the laws of nature
one may easily live to be 100 or even
ISO." he said. “The trouble with
most people is they eat too much
and wear too much.
“The modern flapper. wiih the
single piece what-you-call-it and with
out the corset, is a happy exception
to the rule.”

boar at the Iowa state fair thia year,
was sold by N. A. Dowling of
Valley Junction to W. .1. Graham of
Waverly, Minn., for $3,000.
Almost $50,000 worth of baoy
beeves raised by boys and girls of the
state were auctioned off during
the fa r, bringing an average price of
12 to 15 rents a pound. The top price
was :l6 cents for a Shorthorn belong
ing to James Rees of Pleasantville.
Most of the 362 animals were sold to
packers.
Arizona Land Opened for
Homesteading by War Vets
Washington. Srpt. 2.—About 25.000
acres of public land situated in Mo
jave county. Arizona, were thrown
open to homestead entry by former
service men of the world war by the
Interior department.
Veterans may file upon the tracts
after September 4 at the local land
office in Phoenix. Ariz., and will have
a 91-day preference, after which the
unentered land will be opened to the
general public.
