Special Session Cry of Senators Emergency Farm Legislation ^■'-^rged in Message Signed by Four Western Solons. By International New* Serrioo. Minneapolis, Minn., July 81.—Gen eral Sawyer, President Harding’s phy sician, today is in possession of a tele gram from four western United States senators, to present to the president as soon as his health permits, asking him to call an extra session of con gress to pass emergency farm legisla tion in what the Senators declare is a farm situation that "threatens to be come a national calamity." Senators Henrik Shipstead and Magnus Johnson of Minnesota, Lynn J. Frazier of North Dakota and t’mith W. Brookhart of Iowa, meet ing here last night, drew up the tele gram after an all afternoon confer ence over the situation. They said they would have made the demand more vigorous and perhaps taken other steps, except for the illness of the president, which they deplored. They also wired the president’s phy sicians, expressing hope for his early recovery. Their extra session tele gram follows: "To the President of the United States, Caro of General Sawyer, to Be Delivered When the President’s Health Permits — San Francisco, Cal.: "The present condition of agricul ture threatens a national calamity. We therefore urge that congress be called in extraordinary session «.s soon as possible to meet this emer gency. (Signed.) "SMITH W. BROOKHART. "HENRIK SHIPSTEAD. "LYNN J. FRAZIER. "MAGNUS JOHNSON.” ^frrgps in Seventh Federal Reserve Area Improving Chicago, July 30.—General im provement in all crops on July 1 over previous months was reported by 167 county agent* representing 182,089 farmers in the seventh fed eral reserve district, officials of the reserve bank here reported today. More seasonable weather is stimu lating a rapid growth o* corn, which already has made considerable prog ress in overcoming the handicap! caused by the backward spring, it j was reported. Oats as well as wheat have shorter straw than usual, al though the heads are fairly well tilled. The winter wheat harvest has been delayed about three weeks but the crop is In fair to good condition and the government estimates indicate a production greater than a year ago. The oat* crop, although larger than in 1922, 1* considerably below the five year average. There has been a good supply of small fruits but the crops of apples, peaches and pears are in dicated ai below a year ago. Wage Board Members Blamed for Rail Strike By Associated Press. Chicago, July 31.—A. O. Wharton and F. Grable, labor members of the United States railroad labor board, in a dissenting opinion ter a decision made public yesterday, de clared that the federated Rhop crafts e-ie. ibc of 1922 was due probably to the ■'incapaballity of Chalrihan Ben W. Hooper and R. M. Barton to under stand the value placed upon trade union ethics by bonafide trade unions,” Chairman Hooped and Judge Barton are members of the public group of the board. The statement was made in a dis senting opinion rendered In a de cison by the board ordering the Wages of employes of the Kansas City, Mex ico & Orient railroad arid the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railroad com pany of Texas reduced to the wage scale that prevailed at the termina tion of federal control of the carrier.
