Law Violations;

Difference in Rates Between
California and Chicago
Arouses Curiosity of
Government.
By International ItWa Bon loo.
Chicago, July 29.—Why gasolinn Is
sold at 9 cents a gallon In California
and at 21 and 22 cents In Chicago,
while midcontinent refiners are plan
ning to shut their plants because of
-the crude oil surplus, was the sub
ject of an Investigation by the govern
ment.
Officials of the federal district at
torney’s office were alert In their In
quiry for any sign of a violation of
• the Sherman anti-trust laws. The
government’s Investigation Is a focus
-on the action of members of the Wes
' torn Petroleum Refining association,
who have decided to curtail refining
"to stabilise the market.” This, cer
tain government officials fear, will
•cause a rise In the price of gasoline,
-despite an over-production of crude
oil.
"There Is the greatest oil over-sup
ply the world has ever known.” L. V.
Nicholas, president of the National
Petroleum Marketers association,
told International News Service. "The
public should get the benefit of this
situation by a cut in the gasoline
price.”
Twenty-five refineries in the mid
continental field will bo affected by
the curtailment decision. Kfforts to
ascertain where the Standard Oil
company (Indiana) stood on this ques
tion brought no results, since em
ployes said the board chairman was
nbsent from Chicago and other execu
tives were not at their offices.
It was reported that the principal
advocate of the closing policy for re
fineries had been J. S. Cosden of
Cosden A Co., pklahoma, whose dally
output of 35,000 barrels of gasoline
entitles it to the distinction of being
the greatest single producer in its
territory. Men familiar with oil mat
ters said the shutdown would take
113.000 barrels of oil from the mar
ket dally.
The low prices in California were
attributed to tho ferocity of a re
* tallers’ fight by Chicago oil dealers.
Old Settlers’ Picnic Set
for August 23 at Nemaha
Special Dlepntch to The Omnha Bee.
>4emaha, Neb.. July 28—The 40th
annual "Old Settlers’ picnic” will be
held here August 23 —This has be
come quite an annual event in this
part of the state, and this year there
will be a larger gathering from far
and wide than has been seen before.
One of the oldest men of the town
or state will be on the Job. P. Ker
ker, who has been conducting a meat
market jn Nemaha for the past 58
years, will tell all of the prodigals
who return how things have been
running. He has been In his present
little meat market on tho main street
for the past 48 years and says he can
make bologna the same as he did a
half century ago.
