    A Queer World
Man Has a First Class Jail
1 on His Hands—Doesn’t
Know What to Do With
1 It _
A Question.
Livingston, Mont., July £5.—The
uuestlon of what to Jo with • first
class county Jail, now that he has It,
is facing Mike Walsh of this city to
day, after being informed that a lot
lie purchased in Willie Hail township
at a tax sale two years is the location
■>f the comity jail. The lot was sold
for taxes thought due on tho prop
erly by officials who were unaware
that it belonged to the county and
that the jail was on the lot.
Walsh did not know until Informed
by his attorney, when the lapse of
t imp for redemption by the owner had
passed, that he was the possessor
of a county jail.
A Pal for I .addle Boy.
Vancouver, B. C., July 25.—A
companion for Laddie Boy Is await
ing President Harding here.
An old woman with a nondescript
puppy having traces of Alrdale vis
ited the city hall. Her dog, she
said, looked like the pictures of
Laddie Boy, the president's Air
dale, and she asked permission to
make a present of It to the chief
executive when he visits Vancou
ver tomorrow.
Discouraged from her purpose,
the woman said that If she is not
permitted to present her puppy to
the distinguished visitor she will
express the animal to the White
House in Washington.
20 Years in Pen—Innocent.
Thoniaston, Me., July 25.—Henry
Lambert is a free man after 2$ years’
confinement for a crime which the
governor and his counsel are now con
vinced he did not commit.
^ Lambert was convicted of the mur
der of J. Wesley Allen, his wife and
15-year-old daughter, Alice, in 1901.
Lvidenee of foul play found among
tlie ruins of Allen’s burned farm
house, led to the conviction of Lam
bert after a sensational trial. He was
freed yesterday and given an official
document expressing belief in his in
nocence.
Los Angeles, July 25.—Mrs. Ann
Melvina Pratter celebrated what she
computes to be her 119th birthday
at thf Los Angeles county farm by
receiving numerous callers and re
lating to them reminiscences of her
youth wfen she was a slave in the
south. Mrs. Pratter was born, she
believes in South Carolina, and was
sold 16 times, once for 12,500. She
came to Los Angeles in 1889 and
has been cared for at the county
farm for tlie past three years.
"The Lord has been good to me,”
she told a visitor.
Persistent.
Chicago July 25.—The peristent
wearing of sleeveless dresses and the
excessive application of “make up”
will mean the dismissal of women
employes of the People’s Gas, Light
ami Coke company, Johanne Doane,
dean of women, said today In a notice
to women employes.
Dean Doane also requested the wo
men employes to wear hata while on
tlie streets.
Tlie order afreets 500 girls and all
W(!ive accepted the ruling.
Frankfort Prosecutor
Butchered by Mob
By Associated Press.
Frankfort, July 24.—Dr. Haas, the
public prosecutor, who was killed
during communist disturbances here
Monday, was literally butchered by
the mob whose leaders dragged him
from his home. He was first hauled
through the streets until he was un
conscious. The rioters then stood
him against a lamppost where he was
beaten across the head and face with
iron rods and club and stones until
death came.
The mob t»lso attempted to Invade
the Hotel Frankfurterhof. but was
repulsed by reinforcements and po
lice.
The authorities believe Dr. Haas'
death was Instigated by criminals
whom he had prosecuted, as the ring
leader, who dragged him from the
house, was heard to say, "old man,
I know you!”
Britain Denies Indian
Colony Self-Government
London, July 25.—In a parliamen
tary paper issued last night, the gov
ernment communicates Its decision on
the long disputed question of the
status of Indians In Kenya colony.
The colony and protectorate were
formerly known as the East Africa
protectorate.
i^The essential points In the memor
andum are that: Responsible self
government for the Colony Is out of
the question; that the Indian demands
for equal franchise cannot be granted,
but that the government is prepared
to grant the Indians and Arabs rep
resentation on the legislative council
through the communal system of
election that the elected members of
the council shall comprise 5 Indians,
1 Arab and 11 Europeans. This
leaves the franchise unchanged as
regards white settlers.
Lausanne Celebrates
Peace Treaty Signing
By A Morin ted prew.
Lnusanri*-. July 25.—The treaty of
Lausunne, re-establishing peace In the
near east, now bears the signatures
of Great Rritain, France, Iialy, Japan,
Greece, Rumania nnd Turkey.
Hlmple ceremonies, marking the
termination of negotiations which
have extended over many months,
were carried out In the main hall of
latusanne university this afternoon
and when the representatives of ths
various nations, lod by Isinet I'asha,
had affixed their signatures, President
Heheurer of the Swiss confederation
declared the session adjourned, with
the admonition: "Let the closing
thought be a benediction."
An Impressive demonstration ac
claiming the signing of peace oc
curred In Lausanne toidght.
Proposal to Operate II. S.

Washington, July 25.—The ship
ping board, aftei an all day session,
