uf boy scouts, which has just been
introduced into the United States.
Omaha Is one of the four cities in the
country that nan boast of a pack of
the Wolf Cubs. The other three are
Detroit, New York and Seattle.
The Wolf Cub system offers the
small boy under 12 years of age, the
youngest a lad may be admitted to
the boy scouts according to scout law,
an elemenary school In which to pre
pare himself for the higher order. It
is the boy scout organization on a
smaller and less strenuous scale, the
Wolf Cubs taking into their packs
youngsters from 8 to 12 years of age.
Smaller Hoys Want In.
I.ads of this age, according to local
scout officials, are continually trying
io squeeze into a scout troop, with the
lesult that when a few do become
scouts, the older ones begin to lose
enthusiasm and interest In the ac
tivities. They do not like to play
with the younger lads. What high
school boy of 17 or 18 can interest
bhnself in the thoughtless pranks of
(he grade school lad of 10 or 11?
The junior scout organization,
known ns tho Wolf Cubs had its be
ginnings In England four years ago
and Is officially linked with the scout
movement of that country. Today It
is estimated that there are 20,000
“cubs’’ in London. At the last an
nual rally, about 00,000 from all por
tions of Great Britain were present.
The movement Is also strong in Can
ada, but is Just being launched in
this country.
Omaha Among First.
The introduction of the Wolf Cubs
Into Omaha is due to Earle A. Stir
ling, assistant scoutmaster of Troop
31 for eight years. Two years ago
Mr. Stirling conceived the idea of a
junior scout troop in which the
younger boys might be taught the
essentials of how to live up to the boy
scout motto, "Be prepared." Accord
ingly, he organized the Brothers of
David in September of 1921.
Eater, in February, 1922. after the
English organization had been
brought to his attention, the Brothers
of David were incorporated Into the
Wolf Cubs, with laws and organiza
tion similar to the British order.
There are now 50 Wolf Cubs in
Omaha, composing five packs. They
have a temporary summer camp in
the Florence woods on grounds pro
vided through the courtesy of Byron
K. Hastings, Omaha real estate man,
who Is • member of the advisory
board of the organization.
The cubs spend every weekend at
the camp, $1 to defray food expenses
bsing the only charge. The pro
gram and management of the camp is
much the same as that of the scout
camp at Gifford. The camp is su
1 pervisrd by a health inspector, camp
^p**lirector and a steward to do the
cooking. Religious services are con
ducted at the camp Sundays.
The camp is divided into two rows
of pup tents forming a red division
and a green division between which
keen rivalry in nil camp activities ex
ists. Camp sessions open at 2 Sat
urday afternoon and close at 5 Sun
day.
Have Own Uniform.
The Wolf Cubs have a uniform all
their own, the official British Wolf
Cub uniform, which is Imported from
Eondon. .It consists of a dark green
skull cap with yellow cords and bor
der, a neckerchief of the pack color,
loosely knotted at the throat: a dark
blue, or green, jersey, dark blue
shorts, blue stockings with green top,
worn turned down below the knee,
with the green tabbed garter show
ing on the outside; dark colored shoes
and various Insignia ami badges
which may he acquired.
The cub salute is executed by hold
ing up the first two fingers of the
right hand so as to resemble the ears
of a wolf. Every cub is trained to
obey the law of the pack which is.
"The cub gives in to the old wolf;
the cub does not give in to himself."
The motto of the organization 1s "Do
your best.”
On becoming a Wolf Cub, the new
recruit must swear to keep the cub
promise, "to be loyal to God, my
country and to the law of the Wolf
Cub pack,” and "to do a good turn
to somebody every day."
Wolf Cubs, like boy scouts, are ar
^rShged in three distinct classes, ten
derpads, first star rubs and second
star cubs. Graduation from one
Class to another may be accomplished
qnly by passing certain set testK,
similar (o, but easier than, those re
quired of the boy scout.
Merit Badge* Awarded.
After attaining the rank of a sec
ond star cub, the lad may set about
acquiring proflcicfncy badges, the
equivalent of tho boy scout merit
badges, by passing more rigid tests
on the varied subjects for which the
badges are offered. These Include col
lecting (stamps, Insects, etc.), signal
ling, observing, weaving, drawing,
wood working, first aid, tidying s
bouse, guiding, swimming, team play
ing and athletics.
The proficiency badges are pieces
of colored felt work with the Insignia
of the subject for which they are
given. They are awarded by the
Court of Awards. Beads represent
ing the cub's camp record are also
presented.
Jungle Book is Ritual.
"The Jungle Hook" by Hudyard
Kipling which tells the story of an
Indian boy, Mowgle. who wus seized,
as a baby, and reared among wolves,
is the basis for the various pack rit
uals and ceremonies. Tho name
"Wolf Cubs" was snlected for the or
anlzstlnn because the furry little
brother of the bush seem* to embody
in- ideals ijf keenness, purity and
ladlin' ■ that It is desired to Instill
in tho'Yiilnde of the embryo scouts.
When the cub readies the age of
12 he is entitled to enter the scouts
as a tenderfoot and he will find him
self much morn fitted to assume his
work in tho higher organization. He
nay also conch a rub pock In their
class lests.
"It is a remarkable organization,
and while it Is not officially recog
nized by tire scout councils, former
j cubs do make first rate scouts," said
Robert Evans, field executive of the
umaha council of the Boy Scouts of
America.

Men Tried for Kidnaping
Woman Found Not Guilty

Lumherton, N. C., July 22.—A ver
dict of not guilty on three counts of
an indictment on which they were
tried was returned here Saturday
after 50 minutes by the jury
in the trial of Jule Brogden, Mike
Lawson and Johnson Hedgpeth. The
men were indicted and tried for kid
naping, secret assault and assault on
women as a result of the kidnaping
and flogging near Proctorville, N. C.,
on April 14, of Mrs. Mary Watson
and Mrs. Hattie Purvis.
Following the verdict of not guilty
on the three minor charges. Solicitor
T. A. McNeill immediately nol prossed
the indictment charging first degree
burglary, conviction on which would
have carried with it the death penalty.
The three defendants were released.
