Redickr Loses Semi-Final Match in Transmississippi Golf Tourney to Bockenkamp by 7 and 6 Two St uis Player to Meet for Title Today Omaha Man Is Away Off Game and Encounters Much Hard Luck in His Match. , 1NXIKAH DA, Club, Minnea polis, Minn., June 29. — John ■\Vredlek of Oma ha was elimin ated from the T 1 a n s m i s sis sippi tourni ment In the semi-final round here today by Dick Bockenkomp of St. Louis, 7 up and 8 to play In a match which was nip and tuck until Bockenkamp reached the top of his game on the (list nine holes of the afternoon round and went to the turn six up. There Redick mare a temporary s.and by winning the tenth hole with a 15 foot putt after Bockenkamp had , driven Into woods and had made a brilliant recovery which took him to the edge of the green. Kediek Stymied. The rally ended there. However, Kediek. was stymied on the eleventh green and lost, the hole standing six down and seven to play and was stymier again on the twelfth where Bockenkamp brought the match to •in end by sinking a difficult side , hill putt. At the end of the morn t ing round in which neither player s had done liis best^ Bockenkamp wus * two up. lie was out in 40, to 42 for ■ Kediek. It might have been one up * had not Bdckonkamp run a 30 foot - putt for a birdie 40 on the long fourteenth. In fact the entire result might have been difficult had n?t Bockenkamp done that same thing on a number of other holes. He was outdriven father consistently but his shots to the green were 'so accurate that he had very little dftflculty put * ting to do and when he had a long r. putt to make he made it. Redick, on the other hand, was slightly off his M best form when within range of the 1 green,1 He saved very few shots by t< laying his chips dead and missed the 5 green entirely with his long Irons •| more than once. His driving, how r ever, was perfect. The St. Louie pluy | er took the lend again on the fourth S when Redick half topped his second j shot and failed to reach the green I Oh his third. Thereafter, Bocken I kamp wS* neYer overtaken, although | hs was threatened constantly during the rest of the morning round. He was tw# up at ^he turn and in; j creased it to three when Redtck drove into the woods from the Oth tee and | wasted a stroke meeting out. Redick reduced the lead to one hole f by a 30 foot putt on the 4tlh gTeen I rnd again reduced it to one after t Uockenkamp had taken the 16th, by * running a putt equally as long for a birdie three on the 16th. In the t afternoon round, Boekenkrimp swung into his best game and played so ■ brilliantly on the green that there was no hope of overtaking hint and little chance of holding him even. It was a long putt for a two on the , 220-yard eighth hole of the after * noon round that really clinched the : match for Uockenkamp. It made him * 6 up with but 10 to go and presented ' Redlck wdth an impossible task. In the lower bracket, Eddie Held ' won from Harry Legg decisively, o and 8. A disappointment to the large galleries who were eager to see one local player in the tournament. Now the lltie la certain to go to St. Louis, the home of both of the finalists. . II,L this righthand flat of Jack Dempsey retain the world's championship •stic crown for the House of Dempsey and Kearls after July 4? •Many, an awful many, believe this powerful tight fiAt of the champion wjll fell Tommy Gibbons Just as It dtd Willard. Miske, Brennan, Oarpentier and lots of other fighters. But still there's a host of fight fans who believe this right will fail In Its attempt to crush the champion ship hopes of Tommy Gibbons when these two gladiators clash in an arena at Hhelhy, Mont., next Wednesday. But remember. If Tommy Gibbons succeeds in his at tempt to jar Dempsey loose from his crown, his victory will be the biggest pugilistic upset since poor «T John L. Sullivan fell down while chasing the elusive and youthful Jim Corbett at New Orleans some 30 years ago. All the dope points to a speedy Dempsey victory. But agaoi it i member that dope, like fighters, Is not 'So ll j won’t tip over. There is nothin* in Gibbon's record that would lead us to believe the St. Paul challenger has anythin* but a alight chance with the champion. _ t . F. . . The only advantage we ran sec mat Gibbons has over Jack is his recent ring activity. While Dempsey has been out of the roped arena for more than two years. Gibbons has fought with more or less regularity. How ever, we doubt very much if Jack's idleness has dulled his fighting edge to such a degree that Gibbon* will be returned the victor. Frank Menko, a scribe in whose Judgment we have great faith, writes that Dempsey is in good shape and seemingly faster than ever. Then another thing, the record books show the challenger to be 34 years of age, while Dempsey ha* seen 28 summers. A man of Gibbons' age recuperates slowly and Tom will need to recover quickly from the effects of Dempsey's blows, or he will pick him self up off the canvass In much the same manner as did Carpentler. Dempsey has not beep extended since he began Ills rapid rise In the world of fists, but many beilsve that Jack will have to extend himself if he expects to win over The chal lenger. We can't see It that way. Gibbons has been held even by Boy McCormick, a fourth rater, and beaten by Harry Oreb since ho began to attract real attention two years ago when be "found" his knockout wauop. inmmy wan ai"o mibbghi ny Bartley Madden. Boh Roper. Chkcl Wiggins and Billy Miske. He failed to knoek out Madden. Roper and Miske. Omaha fans remember Bob Roper. He fought here against Andy Schmad er and Jim Herman. Imagine. If you please. Roper, a clumsy fighter. In a ring with the fast moving and hard hittlrrg Dempaev. And to say that Roper would last more than two rounds with Dempsey would be the heigh th of asnlnity. A local scrlhe recently stated that Jack’s weight remain* around ISO pound*. That Is ridiculous. Demp sey will outweigh Gibbons hy at least 20 pound*. Dempsey weighed 19* pound* when he beat Willard tn 1919; he weighed well above 190 w hen he won from the Frenchman. He will weigh in the neighborhood of 195 pound* next Wednesday, while the challenger w II tip the beam at 1T4 or thereabouts. What Is more Important than any thing else Is that Dempsey Is game, whereas doubt has been expressed by fight fans *s fo Tommy'# willing ness to take a licking. Everything points to a Dempsey victory, but as we stated early In this yarn, dope, like fighters, I* not made so It won’t tip over. | Qualifying Round in National Open Spread Over Three Days New York.
