Des Moines, la., June 28.—Des Moines bunched hits on Speece, Oma ha's subway flinger, in three innings today, scoring enough runs to defeat the Buffaloes, 4 to 2, in the opening game of the series. The contest was a hurlers’ battle, in which Gordon Jones, on the mound for the locals, had much the better of his opponent. Jones held the op position to four hits, but five passes that he exuded put him In trouble several times. Scintillating fielding, however, by Buzz Murphy In cen terfield, Nelson at shortstop, and Koenig at third and his own good box work helped him emerge every time except one. On the other hand, Speece was hit for 12 bingles, nine of them coming in the three frames in which the lo cals countejl. The visitors pruned the local lead to one tally In the seventh. McDon ald worked Jones for a pass and took third when Konetchy doubled to cen terfield. Bonowitz's single to center counted McDonald and his manager, but the rally was spoiled when Bono ■wltz was caught trying to take second on the throw in, Murphy to Jones to McLarry to Nelson. In the home half, however, the Boosters scored once more when I Gorman doubled. Nelson heat out an i infield hit and Speece dropped Wll- ] cox's throw of Nelson hit at first,! He Is the man that Kearns blames for the condition of affairs that casts a lengthening shadow of doubt over t he possibility that the Dempaey Oibbons toterpr *e will be conducted ns *« hed>Vd. According toi Kearns, tt was Johnson's careless regard for fact that resulted in the delay in paying the second f 100,000 due on the < hitmplon s guarantee and weak ened public confidence in the match to the extent that tickets Are selling one nt a time, if at all. "On June i:> l called Johnson on the long distance telephone from Butte and asked him if the tn«>ney was ready," Kearns said. "If it wasn't. I informed him. I was ready to do whatever 1 could in helping him raise the money• His reply was that he wished he was as certain of be coming president of the United States as 1 was of gett ng the money. It is a mat ter «>f record that Kearns matched Dempsey with Hill Brennan for July 4 last at Michigan City and both were wafted off the horison by the author! ties ere h cash customer had breasted the bo\ office Meantime, lucrative engagements in New York and else where were allowed to go by default In fact. Kearns even goes so far as to declare he passed up an offer from Uiokard for a iMnpaev uihlmn* bout on July 4. just to accommodate Shel by in the present instance Why?
