Trade Review. Br U. O. DI N £ CO. . Jnt*ns® heat In the east and elsewhere thie week had a repressing effect on busi ness activities. While consumption of some goods was quickened by tho high temperatures, numerous consumers were •baent from the shopping districts, and there was a perceptible Blackening of work at various manufacturing establish ments The seasou has come, with ita weather restraint!, vacations and inven when a practically general re striction of operations logically is to be expected, and the great productive effort of recent months has made shutdowns .or repairs Imperative at different plants. ®®*Y trend in demand Is discernible as ,, 0 first half of the year nears an L ending, the situation still being marked oy irregularity, and many interests «p rent ly are awaiting the passing of the -summer and more exact knowledge of crop results before definitely determin ing their future action. The prevailing one holding commitments within the limits of safety, and it is significant of the existing conser vatisrn that manufacturers are not disposed to accumulate reserve stocks of meichan d'se. Where old contracts have been rilied and additional business has not de veloped In sufficient volume to keep all machinery occupied, curtailment of out put is being practiced, and even in the steel industry Incoming orders are not up to the rate of mill shipments. It is re assuring. on the other hand, that can cellations have been comparatively few. a fact that is attested by the continuance of a remarkably heavy movement of freight on the railroads. There are a number of other encouraging features Pi* sent but elements of uncertainty also appear and prudent Interests maintain a cautious attitude. The extreme heat of the week natural ly imposed restraint on steel mill oper. at Ions, causing a slowing down of work and a further loss of labor. After the extraordinary output of recent months, mo.cover, mills and furnaces are in need or repairs, and a restriction of production Is In sight. In anticipation of this con u.tion. shipments are being hastened waere possible and the movement on old orders is heavy. While demad for steel >as increased In aome Instances, new bookings are not equal to deliveries, and buyers of pig iron apparently are waiting A111* lower prices. Additional declines ot 5Qe to $2 a ton occurred in pig Iron this week, but concessions in finished s’eel have not been general. In every case, prevailing prices of both pig Iron anti steel are materially above those of a yc .r ago. one of the significant phase* of the dry goods situation is the offering at re tail of many lines of merchandise at at tractive prices. The previous sharp rise of prices in primary channels has not •won fully passed on to consumers, and reports are common of both producers and dealers operating on close profit margins. The hot weather of the week tended to simulate demand for light weight apparel, but most buyers are cov ering their immediate needs only and manufacturers have not inad't normal progress In booking orders for future de livery. The rapid price fluctuations in raw cotton have affected cloth sales ad versely, and curtailment of production In New England and elsewhere is increasing steadily. While more new business has recently developed In cotton goods, transactions have been In mainly at lower prices and a decline lu raw cot his week had an unsettling effect, fs. meantime, continue relatively nnd only a small gain has oc 1 In the export inquiry. Each week this month has brought lower prices for hides, and trading in domestic packer stock early this week was at additional declines of l**c to 2c. per pound. About 90,000 light hides were moved at the new prices, one of the large buyers entering the Chicago mark'd for April and May take-off. and packers at the River Plate have operated steadllv at recessions. While low prices prevail in the Argentine, holders there have bppn able to maintain a good sta tistic position by free selling The only exception to the weakness in hides has been in calfskins, which have shown im provement in the west and east. A con siderable quantity of this material has been taken for export to Europe, and pri' es of medium and heavy-weight New York city skins have advanced moder ately. In leather, the outstanding fea ture has been a sizable sale of bottom stock at reduced nrires A'! leading speculative markets were d •prcs's-d much of the time this week, sharp breaks occurring in stocks, wheat and cotton. Under pressure of heavy selling that followed the announcement of two large failures, prices of many storks reached the lowest point of the year and substantial recovery did not <ome until banking support developed The weakness in this quarter had an un settling effeet on both wheat and cotton, *■, witjv. July wheat going close to the dol lar mVcll jind July cotton falling prac tical! y to the 26r basis. As Dun's com prehensive list of wholesale quotations has show*, the main price trend for manv weeks past has been In a down ward direction, the declines largely ex • ^edi^g the advances It Is not normally the season now for active buying In pri mnry channels, and some sellers are more disposed to make price concessions with a view to stimulating demand. The t hnoge in conditions, however, has only come sftpr a considerable rise early In tie yrir. and the index numbers show that • ’■ e g.-neral price level Is still ap t - ■-» nh.ive that of a y v.t r ago.
