    10 Mexicans Die
\ in Church Riot
Mob Storms Durango City Pal
t ace in Protest at Limit on
Clergymen.
V.’lflco City, June 1.—Newspaper
dispatcher from Durango City report
that 10 persons were killed and 17
wounded, eight seriously, when a mob
yesterday stormed the provincial paJ
roe in protest against the law limit
ing to 25 the number of clergymen
allowed each religious denomination.
Military patrols were on duty
throughout the state capital during
the night.
The trouble grew out ot what was
intended to be a demonstration and
protest against the law. A commit
tee of prominent Catholics, accom
panied by a crowd ot 3,000 persons,
marched to the palace to ask the gov
ernor and legislature to^ rescind the
measure. While Its spokesmen were
awaiting admittance to the building,
the assemblage listened to several
fiery speeches and finally began to
bombard the palace with stones. The
guard of mounted police discharged
their rifles over the heads of the
crowd, whereupon the demonstrators
rushed the guards and disarmed them.
In the promiscuous shooting that fol
lowed three policemen and seven civil
ians were killed.
Promulgation of the law about II
days ago caused great excitement
throughout the state, in which there
are normally about 550 Catholic
clergymen. Church officials have
served notice that services will be
suspended unless the measure i» re
moved. ,

Damage in Beaver Valley
Lowlands' Estimated at '
$200,000.
Beaver City. Neb., May 31.—Farm
ers in the lowlands of Beaver valley
began today checking up their losses
from the flood waters which have
inundated their lands for the past
two weeks. While the exact loss to
crops will not be known for several
weeks, it was estimated at $200,000
or more.
All alfalfa crops on the first bottom
of the valley are killed, farmers report,
w'h'bt practically 80 per cent of the
corn crop in the same vicinity will
have to he replanted. Not only was
the flood disastrous to the growing
crops, but it also washed out ditches
In valuable lands, together with one
large bridge, small buildings, culverts
and approaches.
The damage to the Burlington rail
tyay in the valley alone was placed
at not less than $80,000 by trainmen.
Several trainloads of fat cattle are
ready for market, but cannot be
shipped, owning to the tieup in traf
fic. The loss to feeders is expected
[ to run up to several thousand do!
i lars.
