Pennsylvania
Hospital Case
Decision Looking to Reopen
ing Veterans’ Institution at
Dwight, III., Reached—To
Close One at Chicago.
Washington, Mlay "8.—Decision to
Investigate the veterans' hospital situ
ation in Pennsylvania through a spe
cinl commission and to attempt to re
open the institution at Dwight, 111.,
under lease,* was reached today by
the federal hospitalization board.
The commission to study conditions
In Pennsylvania will he composed of
Director Hines of the veterans’ bu
reau, Rear Admiral Stitt, surgeon
general of the navy, and Charles W.
White of St. Elizabeth hospital here.
It will devote its attention to dis
posing of the question of the pro
posed Aspinwall hospital, the site for
which the government already owns,
and the Mark let on hospital, formerly
utilized by the army and later trans
ferred to the ’public health service.
Action was deferred on the offer of
State Senator Vare to turn over his
100-acre estate for hospital purposes.
A suggestion from the American
Region that the Excelsior Springs
<Mo.) hospital, built without a kitchen,
be used for women who served ns
nurses during Hie war, was not acted
upon, hut approval was given Director
Hines' recommendation that the in
stitution lie completed.
The hoard approved the closing of
the Drexel Boulevard hospital at Chi
cago on June 30,_and the transfer of
patients to institutions at Maywood
and Great Rakes, 111., and Milwaukee.
Discovery that many veterans’
bureau hospitals, vocational schools
and other institutions have no suit
able fire regulations, including fire
frills, brought an order from Director
pif^iines that all such institutions draw
up suitable rules.

Aishton, president of the American
Railway association, pointed out that
during recent months, with traffic
volume breaking ail seasonal records,
car shortages had been constantly
diminishing and freight movement
continuously bettered.
Dr, J. P. Parma lee. director of the
bureau of railway economjpsT’-testi
flrd that railroads would expend this
year, a total of $67B..'>00,000 for new
rolling stock. In addition, for im
provements and Extensions to road
beds and terminals, he said, carriers
w -uld expend 8412,000,000. all witfi
a view to expediting car movements
and increasing capacity.
