Buffaloes Go Into Second Place in League Standings When They Beat Sioux City Packers, B to 6 Speece’s Single in Eighth Wins From lowans Sioux City Holds Lead Over Omaha Until Seventh When Herd Ties Score. HOSE Buffaloes of { ptf ours added another victory to their 1 growling list yes terday and stepped .LaS into the second : berth of the West league standings when they nosed the Sioux City Packers out of a fl to-S victory in , tlie second game ; of the series. A young eighth inning rally pro duced the run that beat the i aoner* ana caused a frown to come over Tom Fairweather'* map as he saw the herd push over its ninth lally of the afternoon. The owans had the edge in the scoring column during most of tH# day. but in the seventh the herd came from behind and tied the count. S to * and then in the eighth registered the winning counter. Yesterday's ball game was chuck full of all sorts of play. Hitting was in order on both sides and before ihe contest was finished, Sioux City slammed out 15 hits and the herd one less than that. The Ioawns difficulty was In cashing in on their hits, but the Buffaloes didn’t have much more success along this line. Packers Score First. The Packers started out right off :he bat and tallied a run and then the herd scored two in their half of the first. Omaha chalked up two more in the second and held a 4 to 1 lead enter the team from up north when the third came round. Here May weakened and the visitors scored six runs on two duobles. sacrifice, single, fielders’ choice and Query's home run. After Taylor got a dou ble. Odenwald relieved May. but wasn't any better. In the fourth. Sioux City boosted its total to eight runs when Oden w.-ild weakened and allowed three sin gles and a sacrifice. Wilcox's error helped matters for the Packers and when the half was up two runs were credited to the Iowan*. Falrweather’s club was four runs to the good when the Buffaloes came to bat, but the herd cut the visitors' 15;‘d down to two when McDonald and Uunowitx scored on DcFate's double to left. Nothing happened until the seventh when Defate and Konetchy doubled. The latter's double scored "Tony” and s oux City was only one run In the lead. Griffin and Wilder were easy outs, but Byron Kpeece clouted the pellet to right and Konetchy scored the tying run from second. Okrie was putting everything he hud on the ball and was doing his best to turn back the Buffaloes, but in the fatal eighth he wobbled. Me I >onald. the first man up. worked Okrie for a base on balls. Bonowltx sacrificed "Tex” to second and after Konetchy skied to the Packers’ third iiaseman Griffin came through with i dandy single to center that scored McDonald with the run that beat the Imrans for the second straight day. Okrie Forres Herd. Maple started for Sioux City, but was Jerked In the third In favor of Frank Okrie, former Omaha south paw. Frank was plenty wild and the Buffaloes hit him often. It was Okrie's wildness In the eighth that itiped the herd put over the winning tally. Boss Konetchy started May. but be didn't last long enough to get a good workout. Odenwald was trotted out and. like May, was unable to hold the Packers In check. Finally Konetchy gave Odenwald the high sign anil -ipeece took the mound. The former slate leaguer turned the Iowans back m short order and proved to be the stumbling block in Sioux City's path. "Dinty” Moore copped the slugging honors of the afternoon. This speedy little Sioux City fly-chaser clouted out two double* and a pair of singles '■ut of five times up. beside* scoring three runs. The same teams play this afle, oo’on.
