Shopping Economy By MRS. HAROI.U H. ALLEN. How to Select Ribbons. Women use ribbons for so many practical purposes these days, that some guide for economy In purchas ing them will be of value. Where | shoppers once asked only for attrac- I ttve designs and color in ribbons, they now insist on durability and value as well. Of course the designs in ribbons change every year, according to the prevailing fashion, but there are cer tain staple lines which remain always in favor. And even if the purpchase is intended only for one season, the best is nearly always the wiser choice. The simplest of all weaves is the "tabby” weave, or that found in taffeta ribbon. Taffeta, satin, and many other weaves are exactly like the materials of that name which you buy at the yard goods counter. But “double-faced" ribbons do not corre spond to any other silks. Double faced, satin, and satin-backed velvet are examples of these. The cheaper grades of velvet ribbon are cotton backed. Two-toned ribbons are made in this way, having contrasting colors on opposite sides, as for example, a black or navy ribbon may have a scarlet or yellow back. Changeable silk ribbons are made with warp and weft of different colors Sometimes there are two colors in the warp, and one In the weft. Each weft or “filling thread" In a ribbon is called a “pick." Satin rib bon has only about 90 pecks to the inch, while taffeta has about 120. Do you oft^n wonder why satin rib bons so often "catch,” and wear rough? That is because In tlie mail lug of them, such a large number of the crosswise or filling threads are woven on the surface of tiie ribbon to give It luster. Katin ribbon are also "calendered" to increase their luster. Taffeta ribbons usually have "weighting" in them to give body and stiffness, and many ribbons receive a large amount of glue or other "siz ing" in the finishing process. That is why cheap taffeta ribbon splits where it is creased, or tied into a bow. Soft, unweighted silk shows its beau ty better, and will give longer wear. Grosgrain ribbons have a cross rib of cotton woven In them to give extra strength. Be sure to note whether the silk threads used are also thick and heavy enough to stand the strain of the heavier ones, or the silk threads will soon wear out along the cotton rib. Mult} of the cheap ribbons have the designs printed only on the sur- j face, but the best varieties are warp printed or woven on the loom. The width of iibbons Is standard-| ized up to No. 12. Thus, one half inch wide is asked for as No. 2; one-inch j wide, as No. 5; and on# and one-half inch as No. 12. New Party in Japan Osaka, Japan, May 12.—Sanjl Muto. a prominent business man of Osaka and president of the Kanegafuchl Cot* ton Mill company, has organised a ness political party representing the inter* ests of the commercial and industrial community. It in the first party in Japan ta represent the commercial end indus trial classes, and will participate la the general elections next year. Bee Want Ads Produce Results. Mother “All that I am today, or jiope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.”—Abraham Lincoln. HEN Abraham Lincoln wrote these words, he was simply turning back the pages of history; for Mother worship, with its rites and cere monies, extends back into pagan times. When congress passed the bill setting aside the second Sunday in May as "Mother’s day,” it established a custom which probably appeals to the average person more than any other observed in this age of com mercialism. The arrival of Mother’s day in the calendar of our nation’s festivals is significant, rich in sentiment, tender in meaning. It is an outward demonstration of the latent lo>e and gratitude which the world owes to mothers—from whose flesh and blood the race of man is fashioned and from whose hopes and prayers the faith of man is molded. With the carrying out of this loving and sacred duty comes the realization of the growing lack of tender consideration for absent mothers among wordly minded, busy grown-up children and of the thoughtless neglect of home ties caused by the whirl and pressure of modern life. • Every citizen, whether old or young, rich or poor, happy or sorrowful, remembers her whose love passeth human understand ing, and exerts every effort to make her day a time of tender remembrance. Each of us should pause to remember that friends come to men, and loves; but never such sweet friendship, such true love as mothers know. As long as this nation shall endure may “Mother’s day” be continued.
