r Former Nebraska League Hurler Pitches Buffaloes to 12-1 Victory over Saints Byron Speece Cashes in His Second Victory Dick O'Connor, Hard-Hiuing Fielder, Clouts Out Three Doubles and Scores Four Runs. Special Ol-pateh to The Omaha Bee. T. JOSEPH, Mo., k April 22. — The * Buffaloes hit their true stride today and played like the great team Western league critics know they k are. Byron Specce A was in rare form, I treating the ■ Saints to a 12 to 1 7 defeat — a drub A bing. He all but i blanked his op L ponents, h o 1 ding them scoreless un til the final inning. The day was cold and dreary, and a heavy rain this morning made the field extremely heavy. The muddy grounds kept Speece from getting the shutout he deserved. In the ninth, with one out, Lewan tripled to right. Miller walked. Magee hit to O’Con ner. who reached the ball barely in time to catch it, hut fell headlong on the slippery garden, dropping the sphere, Lewan scoring. The Buffaloes choked the rally off :n a hurry, however. Defate made a spectacular catch of Hilbert’s high line drive and doubled Miller nt second, ending the game. “Wally” Smith sent in "Razor” Led better, one of his star pitchers to try and make it two straight from the Buffaloes, but the Bison pounded his offers to all corners of the lot and drove him from the game In the eighth, when seven runs were added to the four previously made by the visitors. Hurls (mod (Janie. Speece pitched a wonderful game, but he was only one in an all star ag gregation today. He fanned eight, In cluding three of the first four men up, j Magee being among the victims,.and in eight innings held the Saints to l wo hits. The Omaha heaver fur thermore played an important part on the offensive, his double to the left field fence, starting off the fifth, helped the Buffaloes get their first two runs. He sacrificed in the sixth, when Omaha got two more, amt was safe 'on an error In No. 8. the grand chapter for the Nebraskans. O'Conner shared high honors of the day with Speece. The veteran right fielder poled four clean hits, among them three two baggers, and scored four times him self. Hale hit safely three times, Texas leaguers, over short and sec ond. Burch on Scene. ^ Barney Burch came in this morn ing for the game and wore a broad smile* at the park. There were two reasons for his joy—first, because of the magnificent showing of his team and second on account of the attend ance, more than 2,200. It was a miserable cold, damp day and looked impossible for baseball. Burch had $760 rain insurance on the game. OMAHA. AB. R. If. O. A E.
