of young girls, that go to Oxford
do not marry, but “take vows of
perpetual maidenhood." There is
no cause for worry. The 77 per
cent only amount to 1,943 girls.
They will do useful work, even if
they don't have babies. And this
must be remembered. Only wo
men that want babies create real
ly good babies. And only really
good babies are wanted. More im
portant than anything else is the
mother’s affection.
On Wednesday, in the obstetric
department of Johns Hopkins hos
pital in Baltimore, this writer
saw a young colored woman nurs
ing her brand new little black
baby. The combination of affec
tion and happiness in that poor
mother's face "^represents a force
that means more to this world than
all the education pf all the colleges.
That force created colleges and all
else that is good in civilization.
The national political pot is sim
mering. In Nebraska 1.600 citi
zens sign a petition to put Henry
Lord’s name oh - the presidential
ballot as candidate of the progres
sive party. That makes five or
six parties that have wanted him
on the ticket so far. Some real
ly want him,'others want his
money. The latter will .-be disap
pointed.
Mr. Ralston of Indiana is next
to McAdoo the prominent candi
date for the democratic nomination.
Senator Ralston, a first-class
farmer-governor, beat Beveridge
for the senatorship and would
make a strong candidate for the
farmers. Some wise politicians
would bet “even money” on Ral
ston’s nomination.
Many politicians affirm that
| the election of a democrat next
| year is certain, barring unfore
seen Henry Ford developments.

Mr. Hughes, avenging the cow -
' ardly killing of a clergyman in
, Russia, forbids Mme. Kalinin, wife
of the Russian president, to enter

i put the United States in a digni
| fied attitude.
There are men in Russia. Why
not fight them? Mr. Hughes, in
a quarrel with his neighbor, would
not hit the man's wife or baby,
1 he would hit the man or keep
quiet. The United States is big
enough if it chooses, to do some
thing more effective than shut out

gence to realise that everybody
must have a brain, which feet and
hands obey; every nation must
have a head, and courts that are
respected, every factory, newspa
per and candy store “one-man
management.”
Where there is not “one-man
management” there is no-man
management.
Mr. Hoover, secretary of com
merce, explains to a meeting of
women all about the world court,
that subdepartment of the league
of nations. The women listened
nolitely, but many would rather
havp had Mr. Hoover explain the
sudden, violent increase in the
price of sugar that will steal half
a billion dollars from the mothers
of the country.
Mr. Hoover is head of the De
partment of Commerce that sent
out the false statement about sugar
shortage, upon which the grafters
based their stealings.
It may occur to women that Mr.
Hoover would be able to explain
that sugar shortage, close at
home, better than the world court,
some distance off.
