J.’ncoln, Neb., March 9.—(Special
Telegram.)—The state high school
basket ball dope bucket was partly
overturned here this afternoon during
1 lay of the second round of Class A
when Central of Omaha and Lincoln
quintets both went down to defeat.
The defeat of Central by Hastings,
15 to 11, marked the first real upaer
of the tournament. The Purple of
Omaha was counted on to go at least
to the semi-finals, while most dope
ters predicted that Centrisl would
play in the finals and had a good
chance to walk off the court with |
the 1923 state Championship. But—
Beat* Central.
Hastings ruined Central chances.
The proteges of Dick Newman play
ed real basket hall against the Omaha
team. The Tigers guarded like hawks '
throughout the contest and display
ed a branch of teamwork that was a
pleasure to watch.
At the end of the first half Cent’.al -
held the long end of a 7 to 5 score
thanks to the good work of Pereial,
and Lawson. This pair of basketeers
played well all afternoon and do
serye much credit.
In the secorid half the Hastings
team tinenr!#d teamwork that puzzl
ed Central. The Tigers’ guarding
and attack was good. Vermillion,
Hastings star, was unquestionable
the potent factor in Central's de
feat.
The second big upset of the day and
the state tournament came when -
York, expected to he easy "meat",
trimmed the much-touted Lincoln
■high team. 17 to 13. Both teams were
bulwarks on the defense. The Links
were on top for a few minutes and 1
then Coach Hubka’s York quintet
would forge ahead. The half ended
9 to 7 in York’s favor.
Ravenna Uses.
Creighton Prep, another Omaha
team which is being watched closely
by the wiseacres, bumped off the P.a- ,
venna quintet, considered one of the j
semi final quintets. 17 to 4. The Prep- i
men played good basket ball and are j
bound to land near the top. if not
at the top. tomorrow.
Omaha Tech put the skids under
Beatrice. The latter team was touted
as championship material by nearly
all the court followers of eastern Ne
braska. The 17 to 11 victory of Tech
over Beatrice was somewhat of a
surprise.
Charnquist, T*ch forward, set the
scoring pare for lioth teams, with
five goals from the floor. He was
playing in good form and was easily
ihe star of the contest.
