Coarse grains were affected by the action of wheat, corn closing l(w l%c lower. Oats were off and rye 2Mc% There was nothing in the news to account for tho selling, although there were rumors that a Chicago house, sal«l to be short, had made a private settlement with * the longs. The rumor started about the same time as the houses with eastern connec tions Commenced to sell wheat, and with local traders generally long the market quickly dropped to a point where stop orders were caught. There was good buying at $1.20 for May on resting orders which checked tho de cline for quite a while, but they were finally filled. Export Business Light. New crop deliveries of wneat. while , affected by the action of the May, showed | much moro resistance to pressure. Cold weather prevails over the entire winter wheat belt and the forecast indicated rel atively low temperatures tho balance of the week. Liverpool closed 1 and l*4ccl traders were good sellers of rye i on account of the break In other grains, but May showed more strength than | wheat and closed at 32>jc under the lat- • ter, against 34c at the ctoee Wednesday. 1 A house with export connections bought ! on the late break. Tho two northwestern : markets had 123 cars 1*11 Nptea. Bearish sentiment predominated among wheat traders after the close today, the '- •♦ion of the May In breaking from the early high point In the face of mod ♦* nteiy bullish news causing many to look for further liquidation on tne part ! of Jongs with lower prices before there ; was a rally of consequence. However. It was generally believed that much de pended on whether eastern traders who were the best sellers today sold more whoat or supported the market. A narrow: nr of the Chicago-Winnipeg May wheat difference to 4%c at the clear-. compared with 6\c the previous day and 7^4c recently, was regarded a* due to a considerable extern to spreading opera tions. A short while ago the trade hud a report t*"*t th»*re was a large long in terest In May wheat here against sales in toinmpw. and it is known there has been considerable selling of May hero In the past two days against purchases at \* mm peg. In some quarters the belief prevail* that today's heavy selling of wheat was influenced to some extent by the fa< t that the hull side has grown too popular *f late and that the break cleaned up a lot of weakly held grain Many of the local | traders. while bearish at heart, have' been operating on the bull side. On this occa sion the foreign exchange moved up along with the stock market, sterling going at one time within %c of the ?4.6D price of December 13, tlie maxi mum since the wartime support of the market was abandoned by the British exchequer in March of 1919. The advance in stocks was again more marked in the industrial than in the railway shares. It was checked only partly by a 0 per cent call which nowadays is not a matter of great sig nificance. Further testimony to the existing activity of trade was pro vided by the weekly carloading fig ures for the week ending February 3. The total loadings exceeded by more than 200,000 cars or 26*a per cent the highest previous record for the week. Marks Advance. Sterling's advance, practically to last year’s high rate, was not the only point of interest in today's exchange market. The German mark, measured In ten thou sandths of a cent, rose from 4 4** to 62%, making a total recovery of 16:; per cent since 20 was touched on January SO. This movement of the mark has puzzled even the bankers. There was no confirmation today of Wednesday's’ cabled story of 36C.OCO.OOO gold marks from the Itelchs bank reserve being ordered "thrown on the market'' In purchase of paper marks The only authentic report of a German ti^asury operation was of the payment in gold at London, of German bills for 46, 000.000 gold marks, made out to Belsimu six months nun on account of deferred reparations. But that transaction hsa in volved not purchase of paper marks by the German treasury with gold, but sale of paper marks to establish a foreign gold credit Franca advanced with other European exchange* today, but fell bark at the last i Jo Wednesday's price. At London and I’.iris, on the other hand, sterling moved! as violently In favor of the French mar- 1 4 f VLJ* ,la'1 moved against, it on Wednes day. The failure of th# franc to held any j substantial recovery is plainly enough a Consequence, first of doubt over political ! complications which may arise from the ituhr experiment, and second, of an Ides i that the French government may find the occupation enormously expenses.
