Elephant, 108. on Program of Indoor Circus Mary, Brought to U. S. in 1829, to Appear in Shrine Show at Auditorium. ■Mary is 108 years old and doesn't ' care who knows it. Mary is the veteran elephant with the Shrine circus, to show at the Au ditorium here the week of March 5. She was brought to America in 1829 and has witresscd the passing of two generations of mere humans. She originally was owned by John Robinson, pioneer circus proprietor. She remained with the Robinson show until the close of the civil war, when she was purchased by P. T. Barnum. Rater she was sold to Ringling Broth ers, but ID years ago, John G. Rob inson. head of the third generation of the Robinson show, offered the Ringling show $8,000 for the beast and got her back. When the Robin son show sold out to the American circus corporation, Mary went with the rest of the property. Rast year, John R. Agee bought her and added her to his herd. Mary's keepers say she is sweet tempered, mild and gentle most of the time, but that she occasionally has streaks of temperament. Then there's nothing to do but wait until she sweet ens up again. Mary takes pride in lording it over the younger elephants, mere children ^^,'f 50 or KO, who ntake up the rest 1if the herd. Recently she was guest of honor at a birthday party. She was given a cake weighing 60 pounds, made of choice bran and other "delicacies,” lighted by 108 candles. She ate a 15 pound slice and then shared the re mainder with “Boo" and "Ding,” who help her in the elephant act. ' Another feature of the circus is To go. the trained seal. The circus also will include bare hack riders, trapeze performers, acr; ialista. acrobats, contortionists and i towns. One Killed, Several Missing in SI..,00.000 Syracuse Fire Syracuse, X. V., Feb. 13.—One man was killed, several persons were re ported missing and 12 others were in jured, some probably fatally, in a fire that destroyed the Bastable building and caused property loss estimated at more than $1,500,000. John H. Shea, real estate manager, trapped on an upper floor, jumped for a fire net, missed and was killed. Most of the injured leaped from win dows. The building, a six story structure of brick facing on three streets In the heart of the business section and containing the Bastable theater, was an empty shell three hours after the tire was discovered on a lower floor. The cause of the fire had not been determined at a late hour. \Silliam H. Morris Dies. William H.
