When "Mike” Kelley of St. Paul purchased half interest In the Des Moines Boosters away went another Independent Western club. There was a lime and it wasn’t very far off that the Western league threw out its chest and was proud of its.independence, hut time lias changed things as time will do. Of the eight clubs in the circuit, only three teams are independent, Oklahoma City, Wichita and Den ver. Of the three, the Indians and Witches are owned by individuals. There were times last season when it looked as If major league clubs had an interest In Oklahoma City, Wichita and Denver, but so far as we know these three clubs arc, what you might term, independent clubs, n. . . IE Tulsa Oilers, as everyone knows, is controlled by the fc’t. Louis Browns. When the West ern first landed in Tulsa, Jim C'r^jy ford, Phil Ball of the Browns and Spencer Abbott owned the fran chise. No one held a controlling in terest. Then Abbott sold his Inter est to the Browns and the St. Louis Americans controlled the club. Whether this lack of indepen dence is going to help the baseball situation in the Western remains to be seen. Fans remember in 1910 when flic Oilers copped the flag. It was the assistance from the Browns that helped the Tulsa club to win the race. However, the following season didn't find the Browns lending much of a hand to the Oilers and as the result Tulsa landed in Hip cellar of the standings. But in 1911. Last season the Browns were “Johnny-on-the-spot." Didn't the St. Louis club send Dave Danforth to Tulsa at a critical time in the race? They did. What happened? Nothing much, only Tulsa won the championship. Of course, credit must be given to Pitchers George Boohler and Karl Black, also to Bennett and Lamb, heavy sluggers, but at that, Danforth turned in many a victory for the Oilers. • • • ST JOSEPH has been a farm for the Minneapolis Millers for two years. The Saints haven't copped a championship since the Millers have heen farming their players to the Saints and then drag ging them hack Last season St. Joseph was en route to a pennant. The club was hitting like a house afire and re ceived good pitching. What hap pened? The Minneapolis owner .vis ited St. Joseph one day and when he left the burg Bonow-itz and De Kate, two of the liest Saint players, were on their way to Minneapolis. Now St. Paul. \ia "Mike" Kelley, lias found ils way into Dew Moinew. The Boosters received a little sup port from Cleveland last season, hut not enough to amount to any thing. Just what will happen to the Boosters now that St. Paul is in a position to lend a helping hand, is not known, hut it's pretty certain that lies Moines will have a better halt duh this season.
