Roberts to Appear
Before Committee
Omaha Grain Man Called to
Vi ashiiiffton in Connection
^ ith Legislation.
George A. Roberts. Omaha grain
merchant and land owner, has been
called to Washington to appear before
a committee considering pending ag
rieultural finance legislation, llis
cussing thP pending bills. Mr. Roberts
said yesterday:
“The Norbeek Nelson bill seems to
be by far the best bill, as it proposes
a revolving fund of $250,00(1,000 of the
War Finance corporation money to be
used in financing exports of farm
products.
“This does not put the government
in business of buying and selling of
grain, but simply a matter of finan
clng which the War Finance corpora !
tion is already doing.
“This bill, in my estimation, will
give 100 per cent bent fit to every per
son engaged in agriculture, and when :
you give 100 per cent benefit to agri- i
culture, you are also giving 100 per !
cent benefit to ail lines of business
“I am not,in favor of any legisla
tion extending further credits to far
mers, as there are altogether too
ninny of them that are not in a posi
tion to borrow any more money. Then
there is the t<tHatit farmer who owns
no land on which to borrow money.
Hence an extension of credit intended
fur farm mortgages or on collateral
loans, would lie of no benefit whatever
to this class of farmers. The thing
the farmer wants is a price for his
product that will enable him to pay
the debts he already owes. And I be.
Hove the N'orbcck-Nelson bill, if pass
ed, will solve this probem.”
Hr. Charles I), Walcott, secretary
of the Smithsonian Institute, was re
cently elected president of the Amer
ican Association for the Advancement
of Science.
