    A Queer World
^ Coast Town Police Depart
ment Works an Hour to
Get a Drink for a Canary.
All for a Canary.
I,onc Beach, Cal., .Ian. 16.—The po
lice department worked more than an
hour to get a drink for a canary.
Somebody, passing a show window
In a store temporarily closed, saw
the bird repeatedly thrust Its hill into
an empty water cup attached to its
cage. A crowd gathered. Someone
telephoned the polire. Detectives re
sponding ascertained the store was
under the protection of a private
agency. Operatives of that concern
were notified. Dually a man with
it key to the store responded. He
tilled the canary's water cup.
Must Pay the Piper.
San Bernardino, Cal., Jan. 16.—
Divorces are luxuries in California,
according to Judge B. F. Warmer.
He refused yesterday to cut a fee
of $75 awarded to the attorney by
Mrs. John A. Caster, defendant in
an action brought by her husband.
"It's unfair to ask an attorney
to come into court and go through
the muck raking of any divorce ac
tion for less than $75 or $100,” said
Judge Warmer. "Divorces are a
luxury. The fiddler, if he is the
attorney, will be paid."
Hard on Snake Throwers.
Tokio, Dec. —(Correspondence of

who were charged with instigating
Jjlie men who threw a snake on the
••^loor of the diet during a debate on
universal suffrage last February,
have Jieen sentenced by the Tokio
local rourt to three months Imprison
ment. The actual throwers of the
snake were given two months each.
All have appealed.
Not Vsed to City Life.
Los Angeles, Jan. 16.—A deer
which strayed from the Santa
Monica mountains into the streets
of Glendale, a suburb, there to
take fright at automobiles and
street cars, was chased over fences
and through back yurds and finally
roped by a cowboy employed in
the motion pictures, who said ha
planned to train it to act before the
camera.
Girl Attempts to End Life
Behind Counter in Store
Prompt acton the part of fellow
eled-ks probably saved the life of Doro
thy Herbert. IS, clerk In a downtown
store, who gulped a dose of poison
Tuesday while at work behind her
counter.
Other clerks rushed her to a doctor,
who administered first aid and caused
her to be taken to Wise Memorial
hospital, where her condition Is said
not to be critical.
Failure to receive her pay for three
weeks from an eastern concern for
whom she was demonstrating In a
local store left her without funds and
is said to have been the cause of her
. attempt to take her ovVn life. Miss
Herbert’s parents nro, dead. Her two
brothers are students in Omaha. She
had been living at the Paxton hotel.
