Entire Family Carries Disease Household of Five Reported to Health Department as “Diphtheria Carriers.” Mr. and Mr*. L. L. Frankeberger. -S06 Sahler street, and their children, Itobert, Doris and Norlne, 6, 12 and 14, respectively, all were reported to the city health department as "diphtheria carriers.” These five are the entire household. Dr. A. S. Pinto, health commis sioner, stated that this is a striking instance of the value of school medical inspection and of the isolation of car rier cases which are dangerous be cause of their obscuration. "We have been able to reduce diphtheria cases materially," ex plained the health commissioner, "be cause many carrier cases have been discovered before much contagion has been spread. Certain persons may liave a diphtheria affected throat and yet not appear ill to the casual ob server. A school nurse took a culture of Doris Frankeberger at the Sara toga school and then the family phy sician took culture of the entire fam ily. All cultures tested positive, indi cating that every member of this family was a diphtheria carrier.” Lasker Not Over-Confident of Passage of Subsidy Bill Washington, Jan. 8— Defeat of the ship subsidy bill will mean that con gress must R|iend from $60,000,000 to jd $100,000,000 for the construction of fast passenger vessels, Chairman Las ker of the shipping board declared in testimony before the house appropria tions committee in executive session, a transcript of which has just been muds public. Man Goes to Jail by Proxy. Berlin. Jan. 8.—Having been sen tenced to one month's imprisonment, John Grienat, a Berlin taijor, violerft ly disliking the idea of losing his per sonal freedom, persuaded his assist ant Charles Bernlck, to go to Jail "by proxy.” A new suit of clothes was agreed upon as a fitting compensa tion. Accompanied by Mrs. Grienat. the young man. equipped with the identi fication papers of his boss, presented himself at the prison office on the ap pointed day. After a well-acted lach-i rymose scane of farewell from his sup posed spouse, the substitute prisoner was taken to his cell. All during his month's term the grateful boss supplied him amply with food packages. Everything had gone well when on the very day of his dis missal Bernlck had the bad luck of running into an acquaintance in the warden's office who hailed him by his real name. The fraud was discovered. Grienat was sentenced to nine months and his unlucky "proxy” had to spend an other five months on top of the one of voluntary imprisonment. Novel Plea Fails Woman. York, S.
