Telegram.!—Western congressmen, in
terested in the development of water
ways transportation, are staging a
fight for more generous treatment of
the waterways program than is con
templated In the authorizations of the
budget officer. In the pairing down
process, that officer has limited the
waterways appropriation to $27,000,
000.
A meeting of 25 western congress
men was held Monday night at the in
stance of Representative Newton of
Missouri, Representatives McLaughlin
and JefTeris of Nebraska and Johnson
and Chrlstopherson of South Dakota
were present.
It was pointed out the engineer's
report calls for $13,000,000 for the
maintenance of the present work,
leaving only $14,000,000 for new de
velopment. New projects, it is esti
mated, are needed on the Ohio, Mis
sissippi and Missouri, including the
installation of a six-foot channel In
the Missouri ns far as Chamberlain,
S. I!. Surveys are made for this six
foot channel, but the present plans
<ali for the channel only as far up as
Kansas City, with a further project
of keeping tlie present channel open
aliove that. The report calls for
$1,500,000 for all Missouri river proj
ects.
The western congressmen have de
cided to make a light for a total ap
propriation of $43,000,000 in place of
the smaller sum allowed by the bud
get officer.
Postmaster Black Aids
Patrons in Christmas Mailing
Postmaster Charles K Mack took a
swing through the long lobby of the
postofflce himself Tuesday afternoon,
assisting patrons in mailing their
Christmas packages. Ho directed
patrons where to take their packages
to have them weighed and stamped,
and pointed out to them where to mail
• their completed packages.

Side by side through 51 years o£
married life, and now side by side in
death, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowers,
who died within two days of each
other, were buried yesterday after
noon in Forest Lawn cemetery.
Funeral services were held at the
modest little homo at 713 North
Twenty-second street, where the
couple had lived for many years. Two
score friends of all ages gathered to
hear Kev. Arthur Atack read the serv
ice. The two gray caskets were heaped
with rose?.
Mr. and Mrs. Bowers leave three
children, Mrs. If. <'. Sage, Mrs. Pearl
Peterson and Elmer Bowers; and two
grandchildren. Mr. Bowers was 70
and his wife, who nursed him through
the long illness which proved fatal,
was 71. He died last Friday, and Mrs.
Bowers, already ill, sank rapidly and
died two days later. She said she
had no desire to live on without him.
The couple came to Omaha, in lSsti.

neral were Peter Jacobsen, Fred Ja
cobson, Frank Graff, fc. J. Baber,
Busse Johnson and Edward Costello.
