of pei'don, ranging from little girl of

offering everything from a prayer for
a photograph to an opportunity to

to hate and revile her annoyera.
Here and there wna a letter of
grnclou charm, a cry from aome
aore-beaet oul, a word of rewarding
gratitude from one who felt a. debt
to her art, a gllmpn of tome wretch
- with a cancer of ambition gnawing a
haplena aoul. Young girls, unluckily
married and dwelling on farm far
distant from Lo Angeles, described
the color of their hair and eyes, and
the compliments they had had from
their neighbor, and begged to be
brought to Loa Angeles that they
might trade their messes of pottage
for their birthrlghta of wealth and
renown. They opened their windows
to Los Angeles a to the city of de

conveyed more landscape and char

nchleve, and carried with It an air of
helpless doom that was heartbrenk

She missed no Wednesday night at
the Sunset Inn, anil on one ocean on
almost won a dancing prize with a

nights found licr at the Hollywood
Hotel. She wa dancing 'fleici-ly, but
never unite nVv'.-iy from her past. At
the Turkish lllajie she drank the
thick, sweet gluo called rnfl'ee anil
chatted with Uuiille. She. Irarned to
know the Mexican Kitchen. Hhe went
through the Inevitable, phase of look

poor food becauMo It wu quaint.
Hhe joined the horseback rides that
act out from the Heverly Hills Hotel
and threaded the canons till they
came upon breakfast spread in a glen.
Hhe motored to Santa Karbara ami
heard the nightingale at t'A Mlrawd,
or aat on the terrace of the moonlit
Samarkand and dreamed herself in'
Persia. She motored to San Dlegai
and beyond, taatinK the rival delight
of the old Spanish Mission at (Han
Juan Caplstrano. and the gambling
across the Mexican bonjor in Tia
Juana.
She took a course of Philharmonic
concerts, heard the world famotia sing
er and instrumentalists, and regret
ted the tongueles career she had
adopted.
Hut she learned to chatter of nrt
and music In little groups of devotee,
composers, painters, scuptors, verse
makers, story writers that, make uo
the countless clubs of a city 'already
as big and aa busy as half a dozen
Athenses.
She was broadening and deepening
her mind and her heart, ami aerating,
volatilising her apirlt.
She toiled all the while at her own
technic. When ahe finished the short
comedy with Ned IJng she was drawn
back to the Hermond Studio for the
principal role in a big picture. She
waa not yet to be starred, but she
was to he "featured" with a young
man, dive Cielnnd, who was spoken
of as Tom Holhy'a successor.
Young f'lcland fell prey to her
growing fascinations, hut he wna so
much her business rival nid their
professional love scenes were auch
duejs for points, thnt she could not
think of him aa an amateur in love.
Besides, an unsuspected loyalty to
Tom llolhy was wakened In her heart
by the pretence that this raw youth
was Tom a successor.
Tom Holby was out In the Mojave
Desert on location, and his absence
pleaded for him like a still, small
voice that interfered with the mur
mur of nearer lovers.
She was full of impatiences of every
sort .
She had fallen out of love with her
self. Mannerism that directors or crit
ics Milnted out. or thnt she discovered
for herself, vexed her to distraction.
It was n strange thing to recognize
in herself a fault that she detested
in others and was yet unable to
eradicate. Striving to avoid these
recurrent trick, she grew self-con-aeioiiH,
and people said th.it she wa.
