NEVER
to go about learning the truth, and of
the curability of cancer w hem prompt
ly recognized and promptly and prop
erly cured for.
In the second place, the medical
profession must learn about cancer.
Again, we quote liloodgood's state,
mcnt that "breast cancer would be far
more frequently cured if surgeons
knew how to recognize cancer by Its
feel and its appearance, as well as
they know how to operate on it."
To Illustrate again, see the large
number of physicians who wait for
the development of pain before they
will make a diagnosis of cancer.
And, In the third place, we must
keep up the research work.
We will not find the cure for cancer
until we have used millions of ani
mals and plants for study, and weigh
ed carefully the problems of chemis
try, orology, embryology and bacter
iology, as they nre found in persona
with cancer.
One of the things that we are find
ing out is that cancer is not definitely
on the increase. More persons are
dyng from cancer than the published
cancer rate Is on the increase. These
facts cannot be denied.
Rut a part of the Increase is due to
greater candor, more honesty and bet
ter diagnosis. The death certificate
Is less of a liar than It used to be.
Fewer death certificates read "old
age," "general debility," and the like.
Some of this emptying out of the
fallacy bin goes Into the cancer group.
Again, more persons are living to
reach the cancer age. When people
died at the average ago of 33, not
many died from cancer, naturally.
More die of cancer now that death
occurs at average age 65.
The death rate of persons from a
careful study of the records of three
of the largest life Insurance com
panies brought up to the end of 1921,
shows that the cancer rate In persons
under 33 Is decreasing. In fact, there
Is some decrease In "agea less than
P5." There is some Increase In can-
in people over 65.
i We have learned much of the In
heritability of cancer; of some reasons
i fir Its recurrence; of spontaneous cur-
ability; of the possibilities of radia
! turn.
j We can Inoculate It Into animals
nwi watch It and study It therefore.
' There ate score of Indications that
cancer will conio under control within
11 few yeaes.

Food Values of Soups.
Anxious Mother writes: "1. Will
you please tell me the food value of
soup made of round steak, also of
chicken soup, for a boy 16 months
old. Rice is added to the soup, but I
am told that the soup has 110 food
value, only taste, and that the only
food is in the rice.
"2. What is It that makes the
baby's urine smell like ammonia? Is
it serious? What can be done?
KEPI,Y,
1. Such soup would be fairly rich
In food value. It would contain all
the values of the rice and much of the
fat, the salts, and the vitamines, and
some of the proteins from the meat.
Your Informant was about half right.
2. This means acidosis. The cause
of acidosis is overfeeding as a rule.
Generally the diet contains too much
fat when the urine becomes ammon
