It 1 called a' submarine tele phone. It Is built on the principle that eound travels more freely In water titan in tho open air. Sound receivers are placed against the bot tom of tho boat, and by phone con nected with the captain' room. He I thus enabled to hear the throb of the approaching boat or the clang of the bell buoy when If would be Im possible to hear and locate them from any sounds that would come through the air. We jiote ho the old-fashioned com pass of Columbus' day with Its lia bility to constant deviation owing to local surroundings Is being supple mented by the new gyroscope com pass with Its wonderful mechanism, making It almost perfect proof against all such errors, and then even this supplemented by the latest radio com pass, which gives almost absolutely exact readings, taken from an abso lutely correct compass located on shore. Salt Water Evaporated. The system of evaporating salt water, thus taking from the ocean day by day all the water necessary for dllnklng purposes, for bath and lavatories and dish washing, for run ning the engines, and for everything else where fresh water Is needed, is a marvel to me. When the boat Is not fully loaded It carries In Its various tanks 8.1 ",) tons of fresh water, of whic h 4,500 tons are used on a voyage across the ocean. Hut we were In formed by the captain that on trips whfn the cargo Is especially heavy, little or nn fresh water is curried by the boat, all of it being evaporated as they go. The old danger of running lit of water, and passengers suffer ing from lack of water In the mldHt of an oceen of water, Is a thing of the past Insofar as modern boats are con cerned. 1 had heard of the poor stokers down in the hold, tolling and swentlni their lives awny, uliovaling coal nmldn'. the awful heal and fetid aid of their shutln pitMin. tinriitine my mirptlse lien I (esiniM Into Oist hades and found, a delightfully rlixn room, a wan mopping th litt iiol end oil thnt In.
