I low many children hava aeen the
nig Morn mountain ahuep?
They live In the hlgheat cruga T.f
the Rocky mountulna. Their main
defenae la one that nature provide
In making them a hla to climb ateep

cipal enemlea In tho Hlg Horn ar
the engle and mountain lion. Borne
time the mi glen awoop down and
carry off tha Inmba while they are
lying In a aheltered pocket. Moun
tain llotia are able to travel In alieep
country and freouently make a meal
by killing nnd eating a mountain
ahecp. The alieep depend moatly for
their protection on their eyesight,
which la very keen, and their ability
to climb aeemlngly incc.clble placea.
The ahcep'graw moatly on tho fine
Khort grawa found on tho top of the
mouritnlna. The ewca and lamba
flock together during the aummer
HciiHon, and the old rama- ar- by

pot got of tho mountalna. Tho rural
lie along timber line In the day time
nnd get out to graze late In the eve
ning und early In tho morning,
fund nil the manw n edkt nodkndd
It la gnat fun In aummer time to
watch the lamba at play, Jumping
and butting each other on rlma of rock
ho narrow or ao sharp that one won-
dera they don't slip and fall Into the
canyon.
The meat of the mountain aheep la
relished by man and particularly by
the mountain Hon wh'ch will make
erent effort to get one for hla aupper.
Here la an Incident of a mountain lion
that ate a mountain aheep and It
proved to he hla laHt meal:
Max, my partner, wius In tho moun
talna one day, looking for game. While
sitting on a peak, looking over the
country through hla blnoculara, bo
noticed a small band of ewea and
lamba runlng out of a draw and
headed for rougher country. Hc-hlnd
them he saw a mounfciln lion, chaaing
the sheep with long, epiingiiig jumps.
The laat view he got of the aheep, the
lion was still aoma distance behind
them. Taking up hla rifle, he etortea
in the direction In which they had
gone, and after about two hours of
hard climbing, up and down the can
yon, he struck their trail. After fol
lowing the trail a ahort distance he
faw by signs In the anow that tha lion
had overtaken one of the aheep and
had killed and eaten It. From the
spot where the lion had killed the
aheep, the Hon 'a tracks led off to a
thick clump of bushes. Walking care
fully In this direction for a few min
utes, ha aaw the lion raise his head
behind a amall bunh about 20 paces
In front of him. Tha lion had evl
dently made a full meal oh tl-w sheep
and waa enjoying a little nap. Max
raised his rltle and shot the big fellow
right between the eyea.
This Hon measured nine feet and
two Inches from point of Ita nose to
the tip of Its tall. The t-kin la now
hanging In Mux' cabin at Valley, Wyo.
It la Inter. sting to know that the
Hlg Horn basin and Mig Horn nioun
tain derived their name from the
mountain aheep found In thut locality.
These aheep have peculiar horns, large
at the base and of unuatinl form.
