Mr. and Mr, William Newton who
sailed for the orient Inst January,
and who have visited Java, China and
Japan are now in JmLa. Letter have
Just been received by Omaha friends
written by Mrs. Newton from the Mo
tel dc. Indes, Weltevreden, Java. Mr.
Newton writes:
We have Just returned from a most
wonderful 12 days' motoring through
the heart of Java, in addition to which
we have had two day here. The
cenory I unexcelled in the tropic, I
am firmly convinced. There are
many drawbacks, many unpleasant
things, but if one is cursed with a
restless foot and a curiou tempera
ment, one must not expect to find all
the "comforts of home" In trange
lands. One of the worst things is tho
Insect pest; the wee vicious things
like mosquito and sand flies that bile
one eternally, and against which there
I no proof short of crawling In under
the net and going to sleep. Mr. New
ton and I have paid the price, by fall
ing sick of a fever very like dingy
fever, at Pnompenh, Cambodia. It
took tie nearly three weeks to be our
selves again, though we kept on go
ing. It is the sort of thing that is
never fatal, but most Incapacitating.
I m sure 1 shall not know how to
act if anyone ever places before me
again a real head of lettuce. I am
famished for something fresh and
green, no one can express how
much I want a real cup of coffee with
real cream! But I sternly remind my
self that we are over here "for te
and for to admire" and not to eat and
ilr.nk.
In Java the scenery's the thing It
cannot be seen lo Its best sdvantsge
save from a motor car, which take
one up over the mountain and down
through the valleys and far awy
from the it on rail. About 90 per cent
of the Javanese tribe tie Mohamme
dan, and their mosques, which they
call mlslglt, are-very Interesting to
arch. tect ore, though crude as to ma
lerJil and workmanship. Kvery tiniest
village ha one, and larger places hve
several; each village and town also
has a market which they rail pasur,
and here one f.nds huninnlty as close
ly packed as It Is poss.ble to be. The
density of the population in Java,
make one wonder what (ho Dutch
will do wllh thcrn In another hundred
years; espec ally If the Dutch keep
coming over from the Netherlands
as they are doing, and marrying Ma
lay or Javanese wive and settling
down for1 life. They have no color
sense hero! We visited the old Bud
dhist and Hindu temple ruin near
Djokakart.-i, and found them Interest
ing a reminder of whst on-e w in
this island.
It I hard to realize that we ar
south of the equator, for all through
Java, except st the ports, we have
found the weather cool, In some place
in the mountain entirely too cool for
our comfort. Many people told us we
should suffer terribly here with the
heat, and that we had made a big ml
taWe corning at this time, but "long
residents" here tell us (his 1 the beat
time to come, for It Is the dry sea
son, and one Is not deterred from
ifrhtsecing by rains; and the hotel
are not overflowing, a they are dur
ing the tourist season In the winter.
We meet more Australian than any
other white traveler outside of the
Dutch. It seems an easy trip for
them and gets them away from their
winter.
We are returning to Singapore, sail
ing today and arriving the 28th. We
shall go by rail up the Malay Pen
insula to Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
