Parents' Problems
Should a girl of 14 who cares
nothing for dress, be incited to care
more?
This girl will very likely learn from
her young friends to care more about
dress to care, indeed, quite as much
as necessary. Her mother should do
nothing moro than insist upon neat
ness" and cleanness.

hut the Homnolence of the burnlim'
morning dragged her back to the
weird world of sleep.
As her eyes closed she caught night
of a cowlxiy racing the train on a
plunging broncho, nml when she fell
asleep she fell Into the saddle of a
pinto alongside John Woodvllle's
mustang. And she rodo with him
across the sage spotted sands, toward
the brown mountains, and found
there a cabin lu a dark grove. And
it was their new home. She was the
mistress of Jt, but he was the master
of her, a ruthless, laughing husband,
ho would lot lie. denied, but mocked
her fears and made her his wife,
broke her to his will as he broke the
wildly resisting broncho.
She ran, pursued but overtaken, and
woke with a start, spent and panting,
and stared at the drowsy passengers.
Khe was astounded nnd a little ills
ar pointed to find herself still on the
sanni car. His hot cheek agiilnst hers
was only the sun bnked windowpnne
tinkling with the rain of the blown
sand.
Hhe fought off the swooning drow
siness that dragged her back to a
siesta of fancy, and devoted herself to
the stern task of arranging a plausi
ble death of her short-lived bride
groom. Fear of discovery was as acute In
Mem's heart as. if she were planning
genuine homicide. Sbme nuthors
have wept over the slaughter of
their creatures; some have rejoiced In
their murder as a fine nrt. Hut Mem
was a beginner, a bungler. She was
hound to make a bad Job of It. and
,she could not trust her imagination.
After nn hour or two of deep study
that only increased her sense of hope
less foundering, she went to her
luncheon hi the dining car. It was
hard to play executioner on an empty
stomach. On her way back to her
place she saw on an empty seat a
newspaper. The owner was not visi
ble and she resolved that theft was
a proper prelude to a greater atrocity.
So she snatched up the paper and
carried it back to her place. It was
the l.os Angeles Times, an enormous
budget filled with the proud expres
sion ot the fastest-growing city lu
the world, a city tumultuous with
prosperity at a time when nearly
every other city and town was cow
ering under the . aftermath of the
world war.
Mem found (as is to be expected in
any newspapers but those curious
documents built to suit the ostriches
who believe in conceuling reference
to crime and other departures from
monotony) many accounts of murders,
robberies, accidents, and other mani
festations of human fallibility.
Magnificent burglaries were prop-

Altogether an original genius In
crime. Mem envied hlin his In
genuity. There were lnstnnces enough and
too many of deuth ' activities In the
uewspuper. Here was an aviator do
Ing a moving picture stunt whoso
ship caught lire and brought him
down burned to a crisp. Here waa
a man killed In his automobile by a
big tree falling over him.
There was such an embarrassment
of riches that Mem could not select
a single method of doing away with
Mr. Woodvile. Hhe' forgot him utterly
for a while in a page devoted to tho
gossip of moving picture studios. She
saw that Iloblna Teele nnd Tom Hoi
by had come back to Hollywood from
a dash to New York for local color,
and would soon be going out again
"on location," wherever thut was.
Hhe saw that Viva d'Artols and her
husband hnd reopened their benutlful
bungalow iiarKdendale. Hhe saw that
Miriam Yore had arrived and taken
a palatial House tor ner stay.
Maurice Maeterlinck hnd come out
on a speoial train. Many English
men nnd women of fnme were on
their way, and herds of authors who,
being American, were unimportant.
Domestic goods are always shoddy,
and imported elegant.
Mem reverted to ner plot, one
had her mourning all ready to pu
on. But here was a new complica
tion. If she arrived In Yuma as a
widow she must don her mournlii- ;;i
the train. Hhe would have to retire
to the narrow cell of the women's
room and make the change there.
That was Inconvenient, but not im
possible. Jt was tho only thing to
do.
Yet if she went in a maid and out
a widow, people might rtotico tho
change and wonder; for she had been
well observed by the other pas
sengers. A few of them hod re
marked that it was hot, or asked her
If it were not hot. 'Tretty hot.
what?" .one woman had said. Mem
had thought peevishly what a funny
thing it was the way folks used
"pretty" "pretty hot" meant "hide
ous hot."
She knew that women were like
cameras for snapshotting other wom
en's clothes at a glance and remem
bering them like a photograph. Men
didn't notice such things much; yet
men hnd noticed her two men par
ticularly; one of them a flashy. 1m
nudent creature with, hard, exploring
eves that fairly nosed her like a pig's
annul: the other a lonely doer-eyed
thing pleading for pity with a woman-hungry
stare.
Mem had a flash of unusual
cynicism toward the moralities. Why
is It that we feel so sorry for the
loneliness of the timid man and so
disgusted with the loneliness of tho
hold man? The loneliness must hurt
both of them about the rame. Hut
she did not dwell on tlm thought.
Humanity Is never going td give the
sympathy to the hyemt that it wastes
on the. more destructive rabbit.
What settled Metu'a debate was the
reiill.at ion that if she donned her
cra on the tialu It would cause a
atir among the people in wlm-.ii Hying

and the skin was very sore and red.
The itching was intense causing me
to scratch. The itching was worse at
night, and the resultant loss of sleep
rendered me incapable of performing
my work.
" I tried Cuticura Soap and Oint
ment. The first three applications
allayed the itching, and in less than
two months I was healed." (Signed)
