Middle Went Ham
"Love" From Tennis
New York, Sept. 23. (Special.)
A few icasoni ago there wai con-
liderablc aRilation in tennii circle!
over a propoial to eliminate the x
prcision "love" from the K'ossary of
the game. There wai plenty of talk
about it, but in the end it was de
cided that the word was traditional in
the game, and no change wai tug
getcd. In Chicago the tennii people have
taken matters in their own hands and
eliminated the word when referring
to a tennis score. At the national
championships at Gcrmantown there
were several officials from the middle
west who served in the umpire's chair.
Instead of announcing the familiar
"15-love" or "30-love," thev an
nounced "15 Alonzo, 30 Richards."
The word "nothing" was used in
btead of "love."
One of the Chicago umpires in dis
cussing the change said. "Tennis is
a hc-gnme, and to call out 'love
givet it a black eye. VVe have
dropped it entirely in the middle west.
Exterminator's
Victory in Cup
Race Sets Mark
Kstablibhing a record for important
stake events by winning the historic
Saratoga cup at the Saratoga, N. Y.,
track for the fourth year in succes
sion, Willis Sharpe Kilmer's 7-year-old
gelding Exterminator stands out
today as one of the most remarkable
thoroughbreds in the annals of the
American turf. '
No other horse has ever won a han
dicap of such prominence as the Sar
atoga cup fouc times. The best previ
ous mark, the records reveal, was
made by Koainer, another great thor
oughbred, who captured the Saratoga
handicap three tunes, in 1915 and
again in 1917 and 1918.
l'.xtermmator, incidentally. bv
gaining a purse of $6,550, brought his
total earnings for six years of racing
approximately to $20,000, close to
the American record of $244,465,
which Man o' War collected in his
two seasons of running.

North I'latle, Neb., Sept. 21 (By
A. P.) When football practice of
the North Platte High school foot
ball team began here last week, the

Rector and McWilliams, ends; Win-
get and Wilson, guards; Pitman,
center; Palmer, Pease or Weber,
tackles; Strottr, left half: Vearsley, r
right half, and Yates, fullback.
The backheld will be m line fof
plenty of competition as Dent, Hub.
bard, Snyder and Hastings are out
for places and show considerabl
playing ability.
Judging from the enthusiasm
shown in early practice, there it lit.
tie doubt but that Coach Keith Ne.

for the state championship again
this year.
In all likelihood the team will
average around 165 pounds per man.
