These two players would be newcomers in an all-Manhattan world's scries, as a year ago Frankie Frisch still was covering" third base for the New York Nationals, while Mike McNally and Frank Baker di vided the third base assignment for series. ' Oddly enough the tailcnd Red third basemen for the two contenders in the Johnsonian circuit. Not only did the Red Sox sell Dugan to the Yanks, but they also unloaded little Eddie Foster on the Browns. And Foster proved a valuable addition to the St. Louis pennant hunters, Hum's no Dugan, of course, and should the Browns get into the world's series, third base would be regarded as their weak link. But remember what Johnny Rawlings, weak link of the Giants, did to the Yanks in the series of a year ago. In the improbable event of Pitts-? burgh beating out the Giants for the National kague pennant, the Pirates will have one of the crack young sters in the game, in Hal Traynor. Should the lankecs win the Ameri can league pennant, the third base advantage in the world's scries would go to the junior major league. How ever, if the Browns enter the series, either the Giants or Pirates would have a decided advantage at third. Naturally Joe Dugan has had no world's series experience. For years he was exploring the cellar damp of the American league with his dis coverer, Connie Mack, and this is the lirst year that Joe has come into the sunlight. While his batting average of .299 is not as high as several of his aver ages witli Philadelphia, Dugan is playing the game of his life. Few will contradict us when we say that Jumping Joe' is the games leaning third baseman. He is a wonder at coming in for bunts, can let go of the ball from all angles something on the order of Mike Doolan, a player Joe greatly resembles, and he is willing to get in front of anything snucked donn to bis bag, no matter row hard it travel'. 1 Joe is fast, despite the fact that he has 'stolen only three bases up to the lime our averages were closed. He can brat out bunts, though among bis favorite hits are doubles down the left field fntil lint. He stepped into the breach at St. Louis and closed the gap the Browns had at third base, when Ellerbe became disabled. Play ing with a pennant contender, Eddie displayed some of his former fielding ability, while he quickly jacked up his batting average from .210 to .252. He is a nifty hit and run man at bat, and quite skilled in the art of laying them down. Traynor is a third sacker of the old Art Devlin-Bill Bradley type, big and rangy with a fine pair of hand. He takes a hard cut at the ball and, though he lacks experience, he should more than hold his own should Pittsburgh have the luck to get into the series.
