By RALPH WAGNER.
m HAT IT it not id difficult for
I tin Buffaloes to rout the Bears
in a ball game wai very much
in evidence at the Umaha league park,
yettcrday afternoon when the herd
atuMurd the only "Hill" Kodaeu
and hi proteges by (he score of 6
to 1. It It all a matter of who pitehci
una now ne noes it.
Hut the victory ii only half of the
Mory. In the firit place had it not
hrrn for Heinie Manuih and a flock
of Hear errora the remit might have
hern different. Hut we believe in
giving credit w here credit ia due. And
tuch miut be given to Joe Dailey,
Harney litireh's Buffalo hurler from
Seattle. Handsome Joe, by hi
inperb twirling in the pinchea ac
counted eomew-nat for the victory.
Dailey ran into a little tough lurk
in the fourth inning and the ball
tosien from the "Mile High City"
cored two run. Lut they couldn't
hit Joe'i alanta for anything th.M
ronlil bring runner scroti after th
fourth Mania.
The lanky Buffalo hurlrr alloyed
lite Heart to claw him for ix scat
irfl hits, two of these being of the
two-bae variety. lit wa atingy
with hi pane, isiuing only two,
while Groat, the visiting pitcher, alio
handed out a pair of free ducatt to
f ;rt. The Denver chucker wai
touched for nine hiiti, iprinkted
among them being a triple and a dou
ble, lie itruck out five Buffaloea,
but received leaky lupport,
But for the Duffaloei. The hired
hands of Burch chased the Beara all
over the lot and had the outfielder
climbing up the fence spearing the
long drivea that went into the at
mosphere. The Buffaloes icored
three runs in the second. Manush
walked and. went around to third
when Wilcox hit into a fielder's
choice, catching Griffin at third.
Masters blew into a fielder' dish and
Wilcox was nabbed at second. The
ball was whipped down to the Denver
catcher who in turn tried to get
Manush off third, but the ball went
wild and Heinie scored. After all
this happened, Master politely stole
iccond. Spencer vup and singled to
center and Ray O'Brien tried to
throw the ball over the presi coop
and a a reiult Master scored,
Spencer going to third. Dailcy
landed on first when Gome gummed
up a fly catch and Spencer chalked
up the third (core. Gislason ground
ed out and the Bears tried to act up
with the, bat, but without any uc
ccss. Long Hat Long Neck.
However, in the fourth inning
Dailry curved the ball around Long'
long neck and as his Adam's apple
is rather large, said ball came in con
tact with said Adam's apple, thereby
allowing Long to proceed to first
under the "ump's" orders. Patterson
doubled to right and Long scored
the initial Bear score. Great cheers
from "Bill" Rodgers. Cartwright
wheeled into an easy out and Gomes
singled to center, boosting Patter
son across tfie rubber with the sec
ond and final Denver tally of the
contest. Rodgers hit into a fielder's
choice and Parker skied out to "Pug"
Griffin. Exit Denver.
The game was planted on the well
known cake of ice in the Omaha
rixth, although neither team knew it
at the time. .Manush was the first
Buffalo to bat. Gross treated Heinie
to a base on balls, that cost him the
game. Wilcox singled and Manush
went to third. Masters swung for
the third strike and Spencer strolled,
filling the bases. Dailey's fielder's
choice caught Spencer at second, but
allowed Manush to score. Gislason
came through with a timely single
and Wilcox registered the filth run.
Bates whiffed and the scoring ended
tor the inning as Denver never came
near chalking up a count in its half.
Two Games Today.
After two down in the seventh,
Manush slammed the ball out to deep
renter and by some classy base run
ning got around to third. Wilcox got
his second hit of the game and
Heinie scored the final Buffalo score.
A double-header is on the program
for this afternoon. It will br the
final Sunday game of .the season in
Omaha.

Th Country Club, flrookline,
Man., Sept. 9.-(By A. l)-Tho
national amateur golf champiotikhip
was won todsy by Jen W. Swertier,
bringing victory to New York, to ihc
Siwanoy Golf club and to Yale. Ile
vanquished the champion of cham
pion!, Charles Evam, jr., of Chicago,
three up and two lo play.
Golfing youth triumphed over golf
ing age. Evam, "Chiik to the gell
ing world, won his fir.t national title
in 1916. Swcetier, who lays hit
name is Jen, not Jute, ii still in hit
twenty-first year. With one exrrti
lion he is the youngeit rhampion in
the 26 years. of title competition in
thii country. With few exceptions
he was the youuKcit of the tut ( 149
golfer, the moat brilliant field evri
gathered for the event, who art out
here a week ago fur the champion
hip. Over the gine ai exemplified
by eight official and two iitiottu iul

champions snd near chainpioni ol
the United Statri and its section,
many of (hem veteran links cam
paigners, the play of the youth pre
vailed. Through stormy days and
lunny days, Sweetser lasted longest,
Beat. Evans at Own Game.
To golfing enthusiasts the story ol
the success today lies in the fact that
he beat "Chick' Evans at his own
game. It was expected tint Sweet
er would outdrive Evans and he
did. It was thought the would be
off on his approaches and that Evam
would beat him in thii, the depart
ment of play in which "Chick" i
acknowledged the best in the world,
but he did not. Initead, Sweetser
wM usually straight ahead, and it was
"Chick" who was oftenest in tha
rough, who was trapped or bunkered,
trying to get to the giceni and who,
once on, fell short or overran in put
ting fo ththole.
In every match In which he ad
vanced in this tournament his defeat
of II. E. Kenworthy of Providence,
of Willie I. Hunter, fromer British
amateur champion, of Jesse P. Guil
ford, the champion whom he set bark
today, Bobby Jones, who youthful
star though he is, is still Swertser's
elder by a month, and of "Chick"
Evans, a veteran able to avoid such
situations most of the time Sweet
ser set up stymies to impede his ad
versary. This the first year of the
stymie's restoration, and, without
liatrinor Keen 4 Ii aitae it ui.i -till a
factor in the making of the champion
of this year.
Xn his victory today he reversed the
result of his previous meeting with
Evans when he was defeated, one up,
in the semi-final round of the na
tional tournament at St. Louis last
year.
Closing Scene on 16.
The closinsr scene today was on
the 16th green, at the 34th hole of
the match where both Sweetser and
Evans had driven to the trrecn from
the tee, 130 yards away. Chick's ball
rested eight feet away, JPess' was 10
feet distant. The crowd swept down
the fairways, the players were nassetl
through and Sweetser took his putter,
while all sound was stilled. Dormie
three, he almost gave his victory a
touch of the sensational by holdlly i
seeking for a birdie two to win in a
single stroke. He missed by inches.
Chick, who had .stalled defeat by
winning the hole before, tried to stain
it again, also shooting boldly for the
cup. He toomfell short and tbo
match ended, not with the dropping
of a ball, but with Evans shaking the
nana ot his conqueror, conceding t.ie
hole and the match. The crowd
then took the new champion into
its handa and on iH thoulders nnd lie
was carried off the course.
