Tests Indicate Men Entombed in Gold Mine Alive Uncanny Instrument, Lowered Into Argonaut Shaft, r veal No Indication of Demi Hodiei. Jtckton, Cat., Sept. 9. Mora muck and decayed timbering instead of clear paiaag wt found when a bulkhead in the 3,600-foot 'level of the Kennedy wt amathed In early today by one of the crews seeking to reicue the 47 entombed men in tfcs adjoining Argonaut mine. This setback means at least another week will be required to reach the men it was stated. Jackson, Cal., Sept. 9. (By A. P.) Science, through one of it un cannily subtle instrument, had turned despair Snto hope when crew of digger returned today, their hectic task of reaching the spot walled in by rock and debri and flame where 47 workers in the Argonaut gold mine here have been imprisoned for 12 day. It teemed yesterday that the rescuer would release only corpse. An official of the company had ex pressed the belief that all the en tombed miner were dead and every evidence apparently pointed to that. Yet, late last night, came the aston ishing announcement that chemical tests had demonstrated that the men all were alive.1 Argonaut official said they were preparing a formal statement declaring it their opinion that none of the miner had per ished. The official hacked up thci assertion with the offer of a reward of $5,000 to the, first crew reaching vne miner. A delicate instrument, it wa ex plained, "had been lowered into the liery and gassy ha!t tnrougn wmcn the men had gone. It had recorded no gases indicating the presence of a , single dead body. Moreover, it was reported to show that noxiou gases had not penct;ated to the re gion where the merr were entombed, but that the air in the lower level was pure enough to sustain life. An analysis of air current in the shaft indicated that there wa no .carbon monoxide below the 2,500-foot level; Previously it had been believed that poisonous gases had permeated levels far below that. Are-check last night of progress made by rescue crew howed that on the 3,600-foot level 245 feet of muck must be cleared before the 75 feet of solid rock remaining could be penetrated. On the 3,900-foot level there remained 135 feet of -soft substances and 142 feet' of rock. Fair. and Below Normal Temperatures Due Next Week Washington, sept. V.
