Rudy Nearly Cracked.
Three of the four matrhe today
ended on the 15th preen at four up,
three holes to play. It was thrre that
Swcetier' prettily plaved putt sty
mied the champion, and it was there
that Jones completed his victory
against the former caddy who had
held him safely until a few holes be
fore. It was there in turn that
Evans stemmed the successes of
yoiwe- Godrhaux, which had carried
the New Orleans player from six
down to three down, through con
secutive victories at the short 12th,
the lonp 13th and the longer 14th
holes. It different story in
the Tolley-Knepper match. The
British champion of two years ago
and the youngster who had put out
Tolley's compatriot, W. B. Torrance,
two days sinee, and Francis Ouimet
yesterday, came to the home hole for
derision.
Two down at the close of the fore
noon round, and five down at the
sixth green In the afternoon, Tolley
fought back so courageously, with
flashes of brilliant golf intermixed
with remnants of erratic play, that
Knepper found himself only one up
at the 32d hole. The transmissis
sippi champion, sensation of the
tournament, seemed in danger of
cracking.
Knepper in Trouble.
His drive from the 14th had land
ed on the edge of bounds in brush
and mud and he was obliged to pick
up. With a one-hole advantage, he
received a break of luck when his
drive, heading for the tall timber,
struck a boy and bounded back to a
smooth snot on tjie edge of the fair
way. Hi's second shot put him on
the greeif and made possible a putt
for a birdie 3 and a 2 up advantage.
On the 17th Knepper' iron shot
was in a trap and two futile attempts
to get out led to another pick up.
That cut his lead to a lonely 1 and
the way Tolley was then shooting
gave the Englishman a chance to
square the match on the home hole.
Knepper then called again on his
fighting spirit and steadiness. On
the far side of the green in 2 from
a 400-yard tee, he putted to the hole,
but the ball parsed over it. Tolley
made a desperate attrmpt to equal in
his third shot with a chip from the
l?ft of the green, bat when he missed
a curling putt he conceded the hole
and match.
The English player was wild all
forenoon, due in part to illness, it was
said, but he made no reference to this
handicap although playing far above
par. He was not much better in the
i'ftcrnoon, mixing long and wild
drives, sinking a hard putt one min
ute and missing an ca-.y one shortly
after. Undoubtedly the sensational
s!iot of the match was his 200-yard
drive on the seventh hole in the after
noon when he almost nude a hole in
1. The ball dropped witlvn three
inches of the pin for a birdie 2.
Conceded Match.
Jesse Guilford. Woodland Golf
cluljV leading member, did not vacate
"-fti t'tle without a struggle. After
a morning round more or less of a
nightmare to his supporters, ending
with the champion 1 down, his game
and the game of the young challcnser
from Yale, Jene SweeUer, t ghtcnrd
up. Bad putting marred the match.
The champion s siege sun boomed
at intermit tent intervals, hut it was
not often that hit drives were t-ir
ahrad of Seeuer', The driving of
both was good, but their approaches
wr uncertain, and until the after
noon round their nutting was poor.

Discarded Sox May
Get Another Chance
San Francisco, Sept. 7. Jim
Scott, once a world scries hero, who
wa released from the Chicago White
Sox several year ago, because it
wa thought he wa through a a
hurler, staged such a successful
comeback that he ha been recom
mended to the New York Giants by
Bill Lange, John McGraw' western
scout, who once was a major league
star himself.
Titching for the San Francisco
club of the Pacific Coast league,
Scott ha had one of hi most uc
ceasful seasons this year, having won
21 and lost six games. Lange feels
with a strong club like the Giants
behind him, Scott would do as well
in the majors as he is doing in the
minors.
