Why is it that we are bearing so much aboul typhoid cpiddiius due to carrier? In the old days we never heard of am b a thing. Are )ou fellows Irving hi iut some thing over? (.Mirations type roiiie f.f this same iii-nrul from more than one source. There are fewer raes of typhoid due to carriers than there have been in any older period. It's sunidy a rae of the moon getting1 a chance when the sun's away. In the old tunes there was a say ing that when the typhoid rate rose about iS, (he water was responsi ble. The second great raue of ty phoid was infected milk. Thanks to sanitation, water borne typhoid is almost a memory. I'asteuritation has made milk borne typhoid a rare animal. In the spreading of such typhoid a remains, earners play a very im portant part. The statement is made that whenever the typhoid rate ii he low S, carriers are rrsponio'hle for one-half of the disease. In such caie the total number of carrier cases is small far smaller than in the old days, but they attract more attention becaune they are not over shadowed by water and milk ty phoid. Four small carrier epidemics re ported by Grhlen from Minnesota. In the first epidemic there were II rases occurring in four families. The fr.ur families and two other took milk from S.'s dairy. On investigation it was found that Mrs. S. was a carrier, though she gave no history of ever having had typhoid. Mrs. S. was an unusually careful, cleanly woman, and under ordinary circumstances was careful enough to keep from in fecting the milk which she handled and sold. Recause of this care, she sold milk for a year or two without causing typhoid. Then she slipped, anil, in consequence, II cases were infected as the result of drinking one dav's polluted output. The second outbreak followed a farm auction. At this auction many of those in attendance ate hogshead cheese and sandwiches prepared by Sense amnion Are You a Rapid But Slip-Shod Worker? Many persons are always in a rush because they waste a lot of time and then have to hurry to get specified things done in a given time. Fast workers are prone to this habit, for they usually work at such a high pitch, and when they let down at all they are apt to dawdle. Also, the fast worker is often the one who goes faster than he or she can. and do it well. There is another class of persons who, instead of wasting time dawd ling, do a lot of unnecessary work, and put otf the necessary thing un til the last moment, when there is not time to do it well or finish it. If the former class would get their work done and then "loaf," and the latter class would get it settled in mind and do the necessary thing first before taking up the unessen tial, what a great world it would be. There are, of course, some men and some women who actually have more to do than any one person could accomplish well, but they are few. Usually the right sort of planning and the right sort of will power to carry things out will accomplish re sults worth while, without the fever ish haste which results in many errors. I have heard a well known physician say that a man can live without a stomach. Is it true, and. if so. please explain how he could do so? "2. Why should a man choose a variety of foods? "3. Why do hospitals and sani tariums employ dieticians? "4. Why should fruit and vegeta bles be part of our daily diet?" REPLY. 1. The stomach is not a very im portant organ. It breaks up food and digests it, partly with acid and pepsin. If food be properly pre pared it can be digested fairly well by a stomachless man. 2. To satisfy his appetite and to meet his various needs. Sameness of diet is apt to disturb the appetite and upset the nutritional balance. 3.
