only exit, clutched at his throat and
collapsed. Fire Chief Salter, Dineen
nd Hrookdorf rushed into the base
ment after their men.

Two police patrols and other mo-
tor cars soon were carrying the fire
men to emergency hospital at Cen-'
tral police headquarters. Every mem-l
ber of the force from station No. 2.
was taken there with the exception'
of Joseph Nichols, who protested his
company had to- be represented to
the end. and he remained.
Brief treatment put many of the
men in good condition. They were
permitted by Police Surgeons Kin
youn and Murphy to return to the
scene of the fire; other were sent
to their homes.
Thousands of persons crowded
around the scene of the fire.

The Bowen company, declining to
make any estimate of its lossan
