Theie has come into teing here one of the itrangeii courts in all the world Ihe "court of love" where men and women in tearcb of mate may come, pour out their lontfintfi of the heart and be uc cored. He fore the court are Ihe qualification, and yearnings of some 1.300 bachelors, and 1,1'X) ipimteri, but the first day's work resulted in only five tiialina" These, however, weie shining examples of what tiny come. A man, 62, waa mated with a C'dJ Star mother, 4.1; an undertaker was elected as husband for a nurse; a coast guard wat picked to become the protestor and life companion of a fair divorcee; a widow wat slated lo become the helpmate of a painter, and last, but not least, a Kentucky belle a daughter of the mountain- wat snatched up by Thomas Han croft Delker, founder of the court. Over Plate of Hash. The (our! of Love, be it known, it constituted much the same at any other court, having a presiding judge, or cupid in this case, a woman, and a jury of teven, including the cniei oi puuee, a loimcr eoiuivi, telegrapher and four women. Tbe Idea pf the court, to tbe story goes, wa conceived over a plate of bash in the town restaurant, by Del krr and I-ewis Conly, Hammonton't leading cigar store proprietor!. They organised the Lovert' Co-(Jperative union, which in turn produced Ihe love court. Court tat for the first time in the one and only moving picture house, lileeding hearts, with black arrows fiicrcing them through, decorated the icncn and the jury box. The first audience was made up of 12 news taiier reporters, six photographers ant two boyt. Uelker opened court by readmit the letter from the lonely Kentucky belle snd, after going over her qualifica tion!, asked the jury to recommend him, which it did. Youngeit, 18; Oldest, 69. It was announced that of the 1,100 women who sought husbands the youngest was 18 and the oldest ('). The youngest male applicant was 2i and the oldest 79. The jury deliberated lome time in mating the Gold Star mother, whose home ii in Norwalk, Conn., and the 62-year-old man from Elmhurst, N. Y. J hey explained in deciding in favor of the man that he wa well pre served, bad a good job and a healthy bank account. "He ia much youyigrr than hie years," they reported. The five women whose casri were disposed of were notified that in rase they were dissatisfied with the find ings of the court they had two weeks within which to file application! (or new hearings. The dry law has been about the only dry thing in the country for a month or so. 07: Mf'y i s 0 J I J rt-l'7bl)rtMin The Purchate of Thege Bargairn Mean Money In Your Pocket UPRIGHT PIANOS Schubert 898.00 Hinzio $105.00 Shoninier 8118.00 Kimball 8125.00 Price ct Teepl. The bureau of food, drugs and oil employ 14 inpecti(ts. Snce the first of this year these liave mspectcl 9,30.1 cars of gasoline and kerosene and have also made fWl examina tion of food, drugs and sanitary condition. 10 Stuhr, the secretary of agricul ture, declare that consolidation of inspection departments under the code ha resulted in having the work done better by the same number of men. He goes into his files and shows that in two bureaus that arc fairly comparable to two boards un der the old regime the state now has 28 inspectors while before it had 29. The quality and volume of work done, he asserts, hat improved with the selection of employes on a basis of competency rather than politics. At the same time new task have been undertaken and activities have branched out. Three Self Supporting. There vc now four bureaus in his department. His books show that three of them are carried on without tlie appropriation of a cent from the tax funds. They are supported en tirely from the license and inspection fees. For example, each restaurant is re,uired by state law to rcgistei and pay a license of $2 a year. Ho tel pay $2 for each 20 room and $1 more for each additional 10 rooms. Oil inspection costs 6 cents a bar rel, or from $7 to $12 per car, In the days when the governor of Nebraska also acted as head of the inspection department, not a great deal was accomplished, Today - Ne braska enjoys a better grade of gaso line than any of the surrounding states and ourcly because of its rigid law enforcement. The importa tation of condemned gasoline from other states is prevented. The hazard of fire and explosion is lessened, while the amount of power motorists obtain from a gallon of gas is in creased. The United States navy standard rules in this state. The tame men who inspect the oil, also 'inspect the sanitation of the hotels and eating house and en force the pure food laws in the ter ritory they Irsvel. Inspection of hotels wa established year ago at the insistence of traveling men. There, appears lo be sotnithing humorous, t irst glance, in the law requiring bed sheets to be ') inches (n length, but travelers who have had to put up with conditions in some hotels appreciate, the necessity for having a clean sheet ample enough to cover unwashed blankets snd comforts. Hotels Checked Up. It is still necessary to therk up certain classes of hotels, not only for the sake of public health, but to assure that travelers will receive the accommodations for which they pay. A warning is first given th proprie tor, this followed by a written order, il he tails to act, and then by brose- eulioii which frequently ends in a fine. An idea of the requirement of the hotel inspection law is gained from the following order served on the keeper of a small hotel: "Provide rate cards on the Inside of each door .showing the rate per day; designate separate toilets for (men and women by proper signs; thoroughly clean bathtub; provide suitable lights in hallways, especial ly on second floor; thoroughly clean all comforts and blankets and dis card all torn ones; remove all torn and badly worn rugs and, carpets; provide suitable lavatory facilities in all guest room, consisting of wash kowi, pitcher and ample supply of water and covered slop jar; provide sheets not less than ') inches lonsr. either by purchase of new sheets, or oy suitable extension ot those now in use; repair the payer in rooms 4, 8, 11 and 30; provide fly-proof screen tor all outside door and win dow openings; provide spring for toilet door so that they will close themselves; keep license posted in main nauway. Reason for Opposition. A little consideration of these or ders will explain why some of the proprietors affected oppose slate regulation of what they consider their private affairs; however, there is nothing here that is not to the public advantage. One jnav look over the report of hotel and food in spectors under previous sdministra tions and find that they were little more than matters of form. A a further measure to stamp out thi disease the federal governor nt has urged the various stale lo undrtakc a systematic and exten sive campaign. Cattle found io he infected are condemned and the ilate indemnifies the farmer for one third of his loss. Usually tbe animal is shipped lo market and the salvage from ihe carcas helps re duce the expense. A limit of til for a grade cow and $50 for a pure bred is set on the state indemnity. Since the pasrage of the liw. 316 07 csttle have leen tested, 1I.2JI have been found infected and th indem nity has amounted to $115,235. Two entire counties have been tested for thi bovine plague, (.'lay and Washington, and Ootiirlas county it almost cleaned up, thus protecting metropolitan milk users, In the course of time thic expendi ture no doubt will be dropped The sum of $373,600 was originally ap propriated for this bureau by the state legislature, but this was cut by special session to $265,000 for the bienniuin.
