The
ON FIGHTING BACTERIA.
Comparatively ftw organisms arc
present on surface exposed to the
light ind circulating air when the'

Thii it a conclunon of Dri. Con
ever and Laird of the Pennsylvania
health department, after making very
careful examination for bacteria.
Furthermore, they found that the
few bacteria, which survived con-
tinued sunlight and drying for sev
eral hours, belong to the families
which do not cause disease.
After a case of contagion it is cus
tomary to advise that the doors and
woodwork be washed down with
soap and water, and that some ami-
septic be bdd icd.
Conover and Laird's observations
indicate at least a possibility that

As the text indicates, this opinion
is based on actual bacterial exam
inations. The explanation is that the
moistening kept more bacteria alive
than the soap killed or that drying
ana exposure to light were better
germicides than anti-seotic soaos.
These experiments indicate that
washing with the following aotisep
tite soaps had no germicidal action:
2 per cent formaldehyde cream.
10 per cent formaldehyde cream.
Creosol tub soap and naphtha soap,
On the other hand, Dove, in the
Canadian Medical and Surgical Jour
nal, found that after spreading tu
bercle bacilli on a floor, the wood
was freed from the germs by scrub
bing with very hot water and yellow
soap.
.Furthermore, that handkerchiefs
soiled with tubercle bacilli were ster
ilized if they were placed in boiling
water. If the boiling water was
poured in a cold basin, the tempera
ture was still high enough to kill
tubercle bacilli.
The conclusion arrived at was that
washing clothes in hot water and
yellow soap removed the dangers of
infection in sanitaria and homes, as
regards these two cases.

they are not found to be so. Dove's
observations were founded on tests
of cleaning done with boiling wa

But Keep Baby Well.
Mrs. J. G. writes: "I have been
giving my 3-months-old baby a bot
tle feeding of condensed milk be
tween each breast feeding, and find
that the bottle feeding seems to sat
isfy her more than the breast milk.
"I am completely run down since
her birth. She is my third baby. I
was being treated before and after
her birth for heart murmur. The
heart still bothers me at times.
' Would it help me to get strong
if I weaned her entirely, and if so,
would you ' advise the condensed
milk? She seems to thrive on it"

It will help you to get stronger
provided you can keep the baby
from getting sick.
Condensed milk contains too
much sugar.
If you give it, try to give the

The grain markets were slow, with
a iower trend. The news generally
was bearish, but trading was not
active. There was little doing in
export circles early and receipts were
somcmnat neavier. Kams were re
ported in the southwest and the con
dition of the growing corn is very
wuiiciory as a ruie. a better ex
port demand developed on the hrrak
ana mieago reported 1,000,000 bush
eis worked out of that market.
Omaha receipts of wheat were 102
cars, as compared with 170 cars last
year; corn, 61 cars, against 60 oars
last year. Receipts of other trains
were light Total shipments were
in cars, against J10 cars last year.
There was a very good demand
for all erains in the Omaha market.
and all samples were cleaned up
early. A large percentage ol the ar
rivals are grain bought on to arrive
bids and are not sold on the floor.

equal to 6.42c for centrifugal and at that
level purchased about 86,000 bag for
August and September shipment. It w
