Tn men who wers gaticd durtng the war, are in no special dinger of contracting coniumption. According to the law of averages, everybody la in aoiae danger of de eloping that diteaie. But very care ful atudiea made by the War depart meat show that the soldier who waa Sailed in 1917 and 1918 is in no more anger of beeomlng a consumptive than he would have been had there been no gas warfare. This information will bring relief to tne minds ot thousands of worry' ing relatives. Gaa waa such a mys terious substance. Its use was so mysterious. The effects on the bu man body were so mysterious By reason of this mystery, veter ana who had been aaned were al ways fearful that thia vear or next their lungs would show the effects of the gassing. To make their fears worie, they talked to men with consumption who attributed their trouble to the effects of eas. The War deoartment felt the ef fecta of this uneasiness and learning of stonea that were floating around decided to investigate. First, they undertook to find out what the men thought by studying 1.036 applications for . compensation filed with the veterans' bureau. Of these 34 per cent attributed their disability to the after ettects cf being gassed. Of the cases of consumption, 22.5 per cent held gassing to have been responsible. Other percentages ' not especially germane to this question were as follows: - , Of the claims for disability due to Bronchitis,' 7J.5 per cent thought gassing the cause; ' -Heart disease, 14 .per cent . thought gassing the cause; - Asthma, 41.4 per cent thought ' gassing the cause; Rheumatism, 7 per cent 'thought gassing the cause. Nephritis, 4.4 per cent thought ' gassing the cause. Next, they wrote to a large nunv ber of physicians, formerly in the army, of which 13 per cent replied that they thought there was some relationship between being gassed and consumption. . Next, they wrote to 30 medical officers, - associated with hospitals, where ex-soldiers were being treated for consumption.- Five thought that . consumption might be an after ef ' feet of being gassed. ( . . ' A questionnaire sent to thousands 'of physicians, through medical so cieties, showed that 16 per cent -of these thought there was some suph. connection.' . AH- this induced the government to study further, ; They sent a board of medical officers to Camp Grant, IIL, to study the question. They were in session several months. They had laboratory experimental work done in Chicago and they gathered from- the literature reports on- similar experimental work done in France. . , ' " They obtained ' the best opinions available on the subject from the British, the French, the, Germans and the Swiss, and the conclusion drawn from all this material was that con sumption is not one of the after ef fects of gassing. The conclusions after' citing , the expectations .of consumption in each 1,000 men regardless of what their occupation or previous history has been says: . "As to the incidents of pulmonary, tuberculosis resulting from exposure, to gas, it would seem- that it is far, from convincing that gas played any: particular part in this connectlon-and it is doubtful if the incidence of lung tuberculosis among ex-service men is much. greater by reason of the part that gas played."- Those who claimed; to, have de veloped tubefculosis a year after leaving the service from conditions experienced in the army certainly have no basis for such assertion. , Work Harder;' Eat Less. Mrs. L. A. W. writes: "I am 4 feet 11 inches high and weigh 138 pounds. I would like to reduce 20 pounds, as 110 pounds was my former weight. "Is there any kind of a tablet I can getat the drug store to reduce i my weight that will not injure my health in any way, . especially .my heart, as it has been very weak since I had the flue two1 years ago?" - REPLY. r V No. There is no safe way to cheat. .You are fat because you ate more than your work called for. The only way to reduce is to work more than your eats call'for. Therefore, work harder, but espe cially eat lighter. ' You can make light eating, com fortable by filling yo'ur stomach three times a day with greens, tur nips, tomatoes, radishes and other filling near foodsAy"'' -'Y.' .V It May Be Consumption, Mrs. H. D. B. writes: "I am 38 and have had chronic bronchitis for a number of years. Is it very dan- gerou8 ;REtLY: " . Are you certain It is not consump tion. Most cases'! chronic bronchi tis are. Be examined very carefully for consumption .and asthma. " - ; T. B. Can Come Back. S. B. writes : !"I ant going put with a young "man whom..I like -very much. " '. :'. ' ' ' ; - "He told me when he was a boy of 17 he had a touch of tuberculosis, but that he was cured right away. . "I want to know whether that can come back?. ;, ' ' ' . "... That is to say. there was little or no sign of the kind of selling which might have been im atrined if financial judgment had drawn altoeether despondent infer ences from the deadlock in . the strike negotiations and the British note to the European debtor coun tries. Such declines as occurred at the start were followed by quick re coveries and most stocks went above Monday s closing prices. A subse quent slow reaction left the market with irregular changes tor tne aay, but with quiet as many fractional ad vances as fractional declines. The passive attitude of the market undoubtedly pointed to suspension of judgment. Until some new move by one of another of the parties to the railway controversy shall indicate the probable sequel to the reply of the railway executives, the situation is difficult to judge. Little Alarm Felt. On th other hand, the ateadlneaa of the market ahowed absence of acute alarm and might be taken to reflect opinion that th outlook hJ.d not been greately altered by the refusal of Mr. Hardlng'e proposal of restoration of service privilege to the atriktng ahopmen.
