Pit ' Notes.
It was said that the local professionals
war too hearlah on wheat for the values
to remain at th early low level. Al
though th advanc from th low point
waa a little over Ic, th market waa
said to have a better tone. Outild mar
kets, with exception of Mlnneapolla, were
weaker than Chicago and Winnipeg and
durums were very weak.
In the face of the wheat markefa
trength here, there were a number of
tradera who stick to the selling sine on
bulges, believing that the general volume
of apeculation is too email for advance to
be carried very far.
Trading in May gralna started today.
May wheat aold at 4c over December, and
fic. over Sentember. Last year flrat aales
were on August 9 at 11.31. In oorn the
December-May apread waa 3c. May being
at a premium, and May and September
were about tho aame.
Corn Gain Friend.
Corn I gaining friend in some quar
ter, and there are a number who ssy
prices for December are too low and that
the market is oversold. Others talk 60c
for December and say the high tem
neraturcs In the southwest will not dam
age much corn, while others claim that it
will be badly fired.
Board of trade directors were unable to
get a quorunt today and will meet at 10
tomorrow.
Chicago elevatora ar buay loading boata.
Loadlnga from public and private ele
vators from Saturday morning to Mon
day night aggregated 3,843.000 buihele,
mostly wheat and corn.
Wheat tradera paid no attention to
Broomhall' estimate on the exportable
surplus of the world of 680,000,000 bush
els, which is only slightly In excess of
the theoretical Import requirement. Bull
ish ststistics have cost the trade a great
deal of money the past two years and un
til foreign flnancees are adjusted figures
are not expected to have much effect on
prices.
New York Cotton.
New York. Aug. 1. Trading in the local
cotton market was chsracteriatlc of the
wild and - turbulent dealings on all tbe
leading cotton exchangee of th country
today, following publication of the govern
ment figure on the crop aa of July 26.
The report, ehowlng a condition, of 70.8
per cent, was a complete surprise and
buying orders flowed Into the local ring
in large volume. The bidding was so
spirited that the price Jumped 17 a bale
within a few minute fter th first an
nouncement of the report. Traders rushed
around the ring endeavoring to execute
orders, some hastening to cover short line
put out but a few minutes before, others
buying for investment. Later in the day,
on the theory that the world will not
face a cotton shortage in view of the
chaotic conditions in Europe, some selling
orders appeared, bringing about a reaction
of c froth the extreme highs. Many
conditional orders were executed on the
top, and short sales were covered after
the 60-polnt reaction, bringing atout an
other rise and a nervous market. At the
close the list wsa 100 to 111 pointa net
higher, a little better than' 35 a bale for
standard 60-pound bales.
Spot cotton was steady, 110-point ad
vance, 22.55c for middling upland.
Southern spots: Galveston, 22.75c, 100
points advance; New Orleans, 22.50c, 125

New York, Aug, I. Two large
uncertainties, pearma on two inv

all of today's financial markets in
state of hesitation and indecision. It
was known that the railway execu

i'retident Harding's proposed terms
for ending the shopmen's strike.
r or ma! statement by the British
ministry of its attitude towards the
intergovernmental debtt, concerning
which there hat been much rumor
and conjecture, also was expected.
N.lth.r announcement waa mad until
long after the close of business. The dsy'a

for.lgn aaihang market th tierman

of 14 on hundreth of a rent, but rales
on other European market war lull
