Called Off Union Men I'nwilling to Proceed While Possibility Exists for National Settlement. Paltimore, July 29. Negotiations for a separate settlement of tlie shopmen's strike on the Baltimore ' & Ohio railroad ended abruptly when Chairman V. J. McGce of the sys tem shop federation, in conference here, notified Vice President Charles W. Galloway that he and his asso ciates were unwilling to proceed while the possibility exists for a na tional settlement. Mr. Galloway thereupon withdrew 'the proposals which he had laid bctore the shop men earlier in the week and an nounced that the Baltimore & Ohio will go ahead with its efforts to build up its shop forces to normal. The chief reason for ending the negotiations, as set forth in a let ter to C. W. Galloway, vice presi dent in charge of operations and maintenance, from William J. Mc Gee, president of the Baltimore & Ohio shopcrafts federation, was the unwillingness of the delegates to enter any agreement other than on a national basis. Mr. McGee also said that the proposal made by the railway was too indefinite in places to afford the basis of discussion. While the labor delegates returned to points on the Baltimore & Ohio system from which they had as sembled, officials of the road pre pared to continue a vigorous effort to rebuild their forces. Their proposi tion to the men was withdrawn. Wife Posing As Widow. Says Mate International Harvester Man Wins Divorce Decree Here by Default. Stanley L. Illicit dis tilling operations have been respon sible for 25 per cent of the forest fires in northwest states this season, Roy C. Lyle, prohibition director of Washington, declared Friday. He said that a check of recent fires in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and 1 Montana had shown that many of .them had been started by distillers. Some of the fires, Lyle said, he ' had learned, were started deliberately. 5 Moonshiners using portable stills and desiring to change their location have started fires to cover up all traces of the old site, he asserted. Other fires ' were started by careless distilling op erations. ) Men Trapped in Burning Coal Mine Are Rescued ; Murphysboro. 111., July 29.
