Townsend Defends Farm

though disclaiming membership in
the tarm bloc, Senator Townsend,
speaking at Manistique, defended
farmera marketing organizations and
their exemption from the application
of the Sherman anti-trust law and
advocated a protective duty on agri
cultural products. " Both at Manis
tique and in this city, named for
the pioneer father of Senator New
berry, Mr. Townsend expressed his
approval of the soldier bonus bill and
' predicted its passage before the ad
journment of this session of con
gress, phe Sherman anti-trust law,"
said Senator Townsend, in discussing
agrarian problems, "was intended to
prevent combination of corporations
in restraint of trade. It was not in
tended to appjy to the farmers and
there never had been a decision by
the supreme court indicating that
it was meant to apply to agricul
ture. ,
"Many of the lower courts, how
ever, have decided that organizations
of farmers contravene the law ana
must be dissolved. So we passed the
law, assuring exemption of prosecu
tion to those farmers organizations
intended to extend the market for
agricultural products and to reduce
the factor of the middle, man. I

er to deal with his market with the
same freedom as the manufacturer.

ture." Owner Offers Coal Mine
to State for Operation
Springfield, III, July 29. Robert
M. Medill's administration as state
fuel director opened with an offer of
a coal mine from Lewis P. Fisher,
owner of a mine at Cantrall, near
here.
Mr, Fisher offered his entire m,ine
to the state of Illinois to operate as
the state desires. His offer suggested
that coal be dug from his mine to
supply state institutions.
Man Lynched in Texas
Texartcana, Tex., July 29. A quar
rel over a drinking cup between a
street paving foreman and an em
ploye at Hope, Ark, about 30 miles
northeast of Texarkana, was follow
ed by the lynching of the workman
near Guernsey, four miles southwest
of Hope. John West of Emporia,
Kan, waa the man lynched. The
foreman was Henry Worthmgton of
Topeka, Kan.

Blueficld. W. Va. July 29.-Frank
and Will Brown, aged 14 and 16
years, are in jail here charged with
having . killed their father, Elias
Brown, as he was sleeping in his
cabin near Bradshaw. The lads told
deoutv sheriff that the parent
abused them and when he fell asleep
they obtained a shotgun and killed
him.
Detroit. Mich.. Ju!y 29. Harry
Watson, 15 yeari of age, tried to
"bluff" two policemen with his toy
pistol. The officers, believing that
the boy'a .weapon was genuine, fired
upon him and Harry is in a hospital
today near death.
Harry had escaped from the
juventile detention home and the
officers were ordered to arrest him.
Locating him in a nearby alley they
called imon him to surrender but he
drew the supposedly genuine pistol
from his pocket and warned the
patrolmen he was about to fire. The
officers then shot into the air and the
boy fled.' As his pursuers gained
upon him he stopped and again
pointed his toy with a warning
whereupon he was shot in the
shoulder.
"I thoueht te bluff would work
but it didn't," he told the officers.
Harry is alleged to have boasted
that hes was "the youngest criminal
in Detroit" and that "no 'bull' would
ever take me alive."
The officers' were absolved from
blame when it was shown that only
by close scrutiny could Harry's toy
be distinguished from a real pistol.
Bielaski to Stay in Mexico.
Mexico City, July 29. A Bruce
Bielaski' announced today that he had
definitely abandoned his proposed de
parture for the United States. It is
understood to be his desire to re
main in Mexico until all incidents in
connection t with his kidnaping ' are
cleared up. " He had planned to depart
last night. .
