P.) That some golfers play better when not under the necessity of trying to be perfect, has been indicated within two days of the close of the national open championship by no fewer than four of the participants in that event, who were considerably behind the winner. Gene Sarazan of Pittsburgh. The next day after the Skokie meet, Jock Hutchison and Abe Mitchell went to Park Ridge links and shot a round of 18 boles in 66 strokes each, or 7 under par, where as neither of them was able to eaual Newark, N. Then, the next day. Chick Evans, formerly national amateur and open champion, went to the Midlothian links and shot a course record' ot 67 or 5 under par, although the best round he had at Skokie was 72. And at the same meet, Willie Hunter, formerly British amateur champion, scored a 71, as compared with his last round in 80 at Skokie. In these post-championship games the golfers had little at stake and sought only to hit the ball naturally and for the delight of seeing the pellet sail through the air toward the flag. Each shot was played for its own result and not with a view to what effect it would have on the total score at the end of 72 holes. But whether that had a bearing on whether it just happened that these players hit their top speed a few days too late, experts could not agree. That golfer, no matter how clever, cannot always be on top of his game has been shown a great many times. Witches Cash in Double-Header at Buffaloes9 Expense Wichita Copi Opener, 12 to 8, and Bbe Wins Pitch m Battle in Sec ond. 2 to 1. By RALPH WAGNER. Barney Burch's pennant hopes were slightly shattered yesterday afternoon when the Wichita Witches cashed in a double-header at the ex pense of the Buffaloes, the register showing the herd on the short end of 12 to 8 and 2 to 1 scores. Burch figured on capturing both ends of yesterday's bargain day at traction, but konichow he didn't fig ure just right. J the first place, Barney had it all doped out that Maun and Beebe, the two Wichita hurlers, would be pounded hard by the Buffaloes. Maun was nicked for a dozen hits and Beebe for seven, but the Buffaloes forgot to hit at op portune times and lost the double header. Kcdcnbaugh started in the initial game and lasted until Darrough took the hill in the sixth. The former al lowed six hits and the latter the same amount,' making a total of 12, the same amount of bingles collected by the Buffaloes in the opener. The 12 Wichita hits were sprinkled with four homers and a triple, all of which helped the Witches defeat Omaha. Pitchers' Battle. The second game was a pitchers' battle between Coffindaffer of the Buffaloes and the veteran Beebe of the opposition. "Coffey" held the visitors to five scattered hits, but among these five hits were two home runs, a triple and a double. Beebe allowed the Buffaloes six bingles, all of these being of the one-base variety with the exception ot Babe Her man's double in the seventh. Washburn of Wichita copped the sluRginsr honors of the afternoon when he clouted out two homers and a single out of five times at bat in the first game and a homer and single out of four trips to the plate in the second. He scored three of his team's 12 runs in the first and one run in the second affair. Grantham Hits Doubles. Georee Grantham walked off the field with the hitting honors for the Omaha club. George go three doublos out of five times up in the tirst. He didn't do so good in the second game. Heinie Manush increased his home run list to 12 in the first game when he slammed out a circuit ticket in the eighth frame. He got two hits out of four times up in the opener and the same number of bingles out Of four trips to the plate' in the sec ond. The second game was by far the best contest of the day. Coffindaf fer wa,s wild in 'the first three in nings, walking three men in the first two sessions and allowing a homer and triple in the third. After the third, "Coffey" settled down and hurled dandy ball, holding the Witehes hitless for four innings. In the eighth the visitors got their four hits, which didn't amount to any thing, but in the ninth Blakesley slammed the ball out of the lot and Coffindaffer lost his game, 1 to 2. Hurls Good Game. Beebe didn't permit a Buffalo step his foot on the second bag until the seventh, when Manush got a life on an error, scoring a minute later on Herman's double to center. In the ninth Manush got another hit after two heads were down. Herman then knocked a high one out to center field which looked good for a double, but Smith put an end to the rally by allowing the ball Upland in his hands. The Buffaloes held the lead in the first game until the fifth, when the Witches pounded Redenbaugh for a homer and three singles, which re sulted in three scores. Darrough took the mound in the sixth. In the seventh, eighth and ninth the Witches scored seven runs. Pairings in Medal , Play Are Drawn F. J.
