Mr. Bfir'i tarty Meal.
Cuify Beir'i father w a large
person. He wai known at a great
eater. And in the wring, when food
wai acarce in the wood, he was al
ways, hungry. No doubt that wi
one reason why he pent ao much
time away from home. For Mr.
Rear ranged the woods widely in hit
search for anything that would aat
isfy hit appetite.
One day he ramSled down to
Cedar Swamp. And near one end of
it, heaide the creek, he (topped ahort.
Before him stood an odd building
with a sign which read: Uncle
bammy'a Eating House.
"Ah. ha!" Mr. Bear exclaimed.
"Just what I've been looking fori"
And he .went to the door and peeped
in.
That was all he could do. The
doorway was too small for a person
of hit size. So Mr. Rear thrust his
nose into the eating house and said,
"Woofl"
There was somebody inside, with
his hack towards the door. It was
Uncle Sammy Coon, himself, wear
ing a long apron. And when Mr.
'It a. toadstool I And .It

Bear spoke, Uncle Sammy spun
about so quickly that he turned three
and a half times around before he
could stop himself.
"Wh-wh-what do you want?" he
stammered.
"A good meal!" said Mr. Bear. "A
good meal, and be quick about it 1"
He was terribly hungry.
"Come right in!" said Uncle Sam
my Coon, with a sly smile. He had
. already recovered from his fright, for
he 'saw his caller, couldn't squeeze
. through the doorway.
'Til dine outside,'r Mr. Bear told
the eating-house keeper. "Pass me
a menu, please!"
Uncle Sammy Coon thrust a birch
bark atrip into Mr. Bear's paws, tak
ing care to keep out. of reach of Mr.
Bear's claws. .
Mr. Bear's face wore a pleasant
smile as' he sat up and read the
menu:
Frogs' Legs. '
Mice's Ears.
Fish tails. Chicken Livers.
"Tig's Feet.
Last Year's Apples. i
Next Year's Acorns,
"All right!" said Mr. Bear pres
ently. "This menu suits me. But I'm
not fussy. You needn't bother to
take the legs off the frogs, nor the
ears off the mice, nor the tails off
the fish, nor the livers out of the
chickens, nor the feet off the pigs.
I m a plain country person. Style
is nothing to me."
Now, Uncle Sammy Coon began
to make objections. But Mr. Bear
soon put an end to them.
"Maybe I had better come inside,
after all," he remarked. "Perhaps I
could make your doorway bigger, if
I tried."
"Don't trouble yourself!" cried
Uncle Sammy hastily. "My aim is to
please all tastes." And he began to
push Mr. Bear's dinner out of doors,
exactly as that gentleman had; or
dered it. ,
, Cuffv Bear's father began to ei 'oy
the first hearty meal he had had since
the fall before. He ate everything
that Uncle Sammy gave him. And
then he called for more.
"Ther isn't any more," said Uncle
Sammy Coon.
"Whatl" roared Mr. Bear. "There
must be something more." And he
peered into the eating-house again.
"Give me that big mushroom!" he
said.
"That's not meant, to be eaten,"
Uncle Sammy protested. "That's one
of my tables."
"Give me it!" Mr. Bear bellowed..
And Uncle Sammy obeyed him.
Mr. Bear bolted the mushroom in
a jiffy. "Give me that one!" he
growled, pointing at anoth'etof Uncle
Sammy's tables.

Debate in Senate
Washington, July 16. Members of
that exclusive millionaire's club
the United States senate are trans
acting the government's businesa
during these hot July days with all
the comforts of a seashore resort. .
In ante-rooms just ol? the senate
chamber are great luxurious lounges
where senators may cast aside sena
torial dienitv and recline at ease
while electric fans generate cool "sea
breezes on every side. Ice chests
nearby contain cooling drinks, all,
however, strictly within the limits of
Mr. Volstead's law.
An ancient unwritten rule of the
senate cast aside a few vears ago. is
again being ignored by senators and
that helps to keep them cool. This
rule formerly reauired senators to
appear in black clothing. Today, in
efforts to evade Washington's well
known heat, cool white linens and
flannels are the rule rather than the
exception.
While your senator docs his Dest to
keep cool" outside the chamber the
hot weather has not affected him in
debate. He very frequently gats "all
het up" in oratorical effusions despite
the rising thermometer. Even a
hot spell cannot cure senatorial de
bate.
