Fremont, .Neb., July 12. (Special

came to grief here today, when I.
McDonald, 26, president,- owner and
promoter of a mythical "Rent a
Ford" establishment, with a capital
of $28,000, was arrested by local po
lice on the charge of obtaining money
under false pretense.
Investigation proved that -McDonald
was recently paroled from jail
at Ft.. Madison, la., where police state
he was sentenced for forging a $475
check. The alleged promoter makes
his home at Council Bluffs, where he
was formerly employed as a special
agent for the Northwestern railroad,
according to officials..
Was Among Elite.
McDonald came to Fremont about
two weeks ago bubbling over with en
thusiasm and a scheme by which he
intended to operate an automobile
livery with 26 Fords. Drafts amount
ing to 98,lHJU, he said, were enroute
from 'Chicago. He talked his way
into the good graces of several prom
inent Fremonters and became a mem
ber of the "social elite." Last Mon
day he borrowed Deputy Sheriff
Jack Wall's Buick roadster to attend
an Ak-Sar-Ben at Omaha.
Police have gathered several checks
issued by McDonald in various busi
ness places of the city. Complaints
by the manager of Hotel Patminder,
where McDonald enjoyed the privi
leges of a distinguished guest, led to
his arrest, charging that his bill 'was
unpaid.

McCaffrey stated in Fremont today
that McDonald had as yet not placed
any orders.

Cutting of Early Oats
Begun in Randolph Region
Randolph, Neb., July 12. (Special.)
With the first rounds cut from
fields of early oats the past weekend,
cutting of early oats began in earnest
here today. Early oats promise a
good crop, some fields being estimat
ed at 35 to 40 bushels. Late oats, es
pecially sown after the' snowstorm
of April 10, are thin in stand and only
a fair crop is , expected. Corn has
never looked better and although
there has been nothing but threats
of rain for a week, is not suffering
from dryness. Potatoes have devel
oped much top, but rain which fell
at the "set-ting" season promise a
good yield. Rye which has been har
vested has yielded well, but is short
of straw.
Concerts at Plattsmouth
Plattsmouth, Neb., July 12. (Spe
cial.) The city council has arranged
for weekly band concerts by the
Elks band of this city. The council
recently voted a small levy for "en
tertainment and amusement," but not
until this week were arrangements
made for the city to stand the ex
pense of these concerts, which for-,
merly had been borne by popular
subscription among the business men.

Washington, July 12. Agricul
tural senators failed yesterday in an
attempt to eliminate a provision from
the McCumber tariff bill which in
effect exempts soap manufacturers
and others, -using vegetable oils for
noncdible purposes, from the pay
ment of duty.
Senator Gooding. Idaho, head of
the western agricultural tariff bloc,
led the fielit for the elimination of
the provision. A motipn made by
him to strike it out was defeated by
a vote of 24 to 33. Sixteen repub
lican senators were among those vot
ing in the affirmative. Ihcy were
Senators Capper, Kansas; Harreld,
Oklahoma; Johnson and Shorrridge,
Lalitornta; Kawson, Iowa; Kellogg,
Minnesota; Ladd, North Dakota;
Ball, Delaware; Jones and 1'oindex
ter, Washington; Townsend, Michi
gan; Uddie, Mevada; I'hipps and
Nicholson, Colorado: McEnery, Ore
gon, and Uoodmg.

imposes duties of 3 cents per pound
on cottonseed oil and soya beans.
Approval of the clastic tariff pro
visions of the McCumber bill were
urged by Senator Edge, New Jersey.
"If the tariff bill, in its final form,
fails to provide, otherwise than con
gressional 'action, some other meth
ods through which individual sched
ules can be revised downward as
well as upward, as circumstances
and investigation should warrant I
cannot vote for it," said Senator
Edge.
