The hours had been so strenuously
filled since my father's return that

his firmness of flesh, his appearance
of middle-aged muscular strength as
contrasted with his abundant snow--white
hair, brushed into a military
pompadour, his vhite, carefully
curled mustache, and his Vandyke
beard.
He wore the same militay cape
topcoat as when I bad first seen
him, and with careful punctilious
ness carried his hat in his hand as
he talked to the ultra-fashionable
women and the pompous man who
accompanied him, and who had ev
ery appearance of being possessed
o. unlimited means, but exceeding
ly circumscribed intelligence. And
over his eyes were the same thick
lcnsed glasses.
I waited tensely for the first speech
from his lips. And when he did speak
I found that accents and inflections
were exactly as they had sounded in
the train. Either I , had been mis
taken, and he really was as foreign
as he looked, or "else "he was past
master of the art of keeping up his
disguise.
"If you will give me the great
pleasure of looking at some what

Mother Graham Comments.
"Of course, Don' Ramon," the
younger woman of the party said
gushingly. 'You will not find anything
like your own exquisite belongings
here. But it is the best place around,
in fact, the only place, since that
shop at Southampton did not have
what you wished."
"Oh I but those things in that
other shop were im-poss-i-beel." He
drawled ihe syllables fascinatingly.
"Ah! these are much better. Will
you give me two dozen?"
He put his hand to his breast
pocket, brought it back empty,
laughed lightly.
"I am the most forgetful person,"
he said. "I have left my billbook in
my room. I am sorry to have given
you that trouble of showing them.

There were impassioned protests
before the words had left his mouth.
"Nonsense! Of course I shall be
your banker," the pompous man an
nounced. "That will not be necessary," the
suave proprietor of the shop said.
"We shall be only too glad to have

"Ramon Almirez," supplied the
younger woman with a languishing
glance toward the picturesque figure
of the foreigner.
"Don Almirez open a'n account
with us."
"Hal Ha! That is very good," Don
Ramon appeared vastly amused. "I
did not expect to open an account, as
you say, when I left your home to
day." He swept a courtly bow to
the two women. "I shall be very glad
to accept your courtes," nodding af
fably to the shopkeeper.
"Is there something else we can
show you?" the proprietor asked.
"Some slTirts "
Don Ramon lifted his shoulders in
a graceful shrug.
"My shirts are custom-made, my
good man-" he said loftily. "But
i do not know some of thew are
getting worn, and my tailor is in
London. Let me look ai some of
them."
"Fiddlesticks!" My mother-inlaw,
who lorgnette to her eyes, had been
watching the little by-play, lowered
it and spoke in a low tone to the
quiet saleswoman behind the counter
who had paid no attention to the
scene in front of the store. "That
chap's just a ctever, high-class con
fidence man, Margaret 1" She raised
her voice as she found me missing
from her side. ."Where have you
gone?"
From . my station behind the
draperies' my eyes were still fixed up
on the face of the man whom I had
met in the train, and at my mother-in-law's
utterance -of my name I
saw him stiffen into an attention not
waranted by the casual utterance
later. And when a second or two
later I saw him furtively eyeing the
part of the store where we were,
I would have staked a great deal
upon the theory that he had recog
nized both my name and mother-in-law's
voice.

Why One Mouthful Wm too Much.
Now, CulTy Bear and hi iter
Silkie were not the only ones in
the neighborhood that cared r
maple sugar. There was Johnnie
lireen; and there wa hi triend
Red. who lived over the hill. They
liked sweet thingt a much as any.
body eUe. Their favorite spring
sport was to take maple syrup iroiu
the sugarhouse, go a little way into
the woods and "sugar off," as they
called it.
On that day when Cuffy and
Silkie coasted down to the t ucar
liouac Johnnie and Red had built a j
tire just inside the edge of thei
woods. Over it they had boiled
some syrup. And when it was just
thick enough they had poured it
i upon trie snow mat lay deep anil
clean everywhere.
: The boy had eaten a great
quantity of the ewci-V fticky wax
that formed upon the snow. But
I they couldn't eat it all.
j "Let's leave it here," Johnnie
i Green had said with a sigh when

farmhouse. "We can conic back

But we'll have to pretend to eat
a little. We can eat some pickles,
maybe, if they're sour enough."
So off they had gone, down the
hill. And then, after a while, came
Cuffy" B;ar and his sister Silkie.
Cuffy's nose led him straight to the
treat that the hoys had left upon
the snow.
Cuffy did not try to swallow any

She did her best to copy Cuffy.
In less than a minute their mouths
were crammed with the stiff wax.
Still there was more upon the snow.
And the same thought came to them
both: What a pity to leave it there!
So they both began to chew.
Horrors! In less than a second
the maple wax had locked their
jaws fast.
Into Cuffv Bear's greedy eyes
flashed a look of fright. He pawed
wildly at his piggish snout.
His sister Silkie wanted to cry
But she couldn't open her mouth.
She could only moan.
Of course there was just one thing
to be done. And all at once they
started to do it. They turned their
backs on what was left of the feast
and went scrambling up the side of
the mountain, towards their home.
As usual, Cuffy led the way, mak
ing strange grunts and groans as
he climbed. Following him, little
Silkie did her best to keep up with
him. If he hadn't stopped now and
then to claw at his mouth and rub
his muzzle against a tree trunk she
would certainly have been left far,
far behind. For Cuffy was in a
great hurry to get home to his
mother..
Being very busy with her spring
housecleaning, Mrs. Bear hardly
gave her children a glance when
they crept into the den. She did
not speak to them. But the good
lady thought, "What dear children!
They know I'm working hard, so
they're trying to be quiet." It was
almost the only time she could
think of when they hadn't burst in
upon her 'with dozens of questions
if they weren't quarreling. "I'll
give trjem a little treat," Mrs. Bear
said to herself. So she spoke to
them. "You'll find some acorns
under that heap of dry leaves in the
cocier."
To her great surprise neither
Cuffy nor Silkie pounced upon the
goodies. They only looked at her
without saying a word.
Mrs. Bear thought that was very
queer.
