Good Ball for

Omaha '.ci Score in ftglith

When Ymior Chalk

IAKNKY BURCHS
Omaha Buffaloes had
ton much Fourth of
July celebration.
After winning 14
competitive ball games
the Hutf!oc e,ter
day allowed the lowly
Denver heart to slip
them a 7 to 2 defeat in
the third came of the series.
But, at that, the Rear deserved to
win, because they out hit the Buffa
loes and received better pitching
from "I.anky" Wetzel, the acc of
Dan Rodger' Denver pitching htalf.
The warm afternoon aeemed to
agree with Wetel, as thia Bear
curved 'em over in such fashion that
the Buffaloes connected safely only
even times during the game, which
is very unusual tor the home boys.
Darrough on Mound.
When the "ump' announced to
the customers that Clarence Dar
. rough, the "iron man" of the team,
would hurl for the Buffaloes, the tans
leaned back in their six-hit seats
satisfied that the herd would win its
ISth straight victory, but
Patrough failed to fool the Bears.
He was pounded very gently by the
athletes from the "mile high" city,
but was pounded at opportune times.
Clarence held the Grizzlies to five
hits until the ninth, when Rodgers'
clan got sort of hostile and scored i
fiye runs on three base on balls, a ;
sacrifice, an error, a single and a j
double. . i
It was a pitchers' conflict until the 1
ninth and then it was just Denver.
The score was knotted, i all, when
the Bears clawed Darrough for five
runs in the last session.
Bean Score Run.
The Bears started out like they j
were. going to knock Darrough out
of the box in the first inning. Rodg
ers worked Darrough for a base on
balls and then Gomes came along
with a single. Long smacked the
agate to right for a single and Rodg
ers pulle,d himself 'across the plate.
The scoring activities for Denver in
this stania ceased when Cartwright
wheeled into double play.
Not satisfied with Denver holding
the lead, the Buffaloes planted one
run in their scoring column in the
initial spasm, when Gislason got a
base on balls. Apperson failed to
cause the Bears any trouble, but
Grantham singled and "Whitey
went to third, scoring a minute later
on an infield out. Grantham then
piKfered second, much to the sur
prise of the visitors, but "Babe
Herman was an easy out.
Nothing happened in the second
inning that caused any of the 18
plavcrs to lose their jobs, but in the
third Denver forged ahead of the
Buffaloes when Patterson thought
he was Kenneth Williams and
knocked a home run over the center
field lumber.
Score Count in Eighth.
The Buffaloes trailed the Bears
until the eighth, when the visitors got
all excited and allowed the locals to
knot the count. It happened this
Apperson singled. Grantham
clouted out a double and the "Jack
Rabbit" went to third. Manush blew
into a fielder's choice and the 'Rab
bit" was snared at the plate, Grant
ham taking third on the play. Ma
nush stole second and Catcher Parker
whipped the ball down to second,
but Wetzel nabbed the throw and
in turn heaved the apple to Third
Baseman Patterson, who muffed the
throw, allowing Grantham to score
the tieing run.
Then came the ninth and Denver s
five runs, which broke the Buffaloes
winning streak and resulted in the
local club going back to fifth posi
tion in the standings.
The same teams play again this
afternoon.
